President’s Welcome - For Alumni
Welcome to the Manhattan College website. We are proud of Manhattan’s Lasallian Catholic tradition, of its amazing growth and stature over 150 years, and of the mission that has always guided us – a commitment to offer an outstanding education to bright young men and women, regardless of their economic circumstances. As alumni of our great institution, you have played a large part in making Manhattan what it is today, and we are deeply grateful for the loyalty and interest you have displayed since your graduation.
The College Today
Our Jaspers receive the special advantages of a Manhattan education – a caring and scholarly faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, and a strong network that links students and alumni to each other in mutually beneficial ways. Manhattan credentials elicit professional advice, internships, and often, placement in a student’s chosen profession. Our mentoring program is growing exponentially, offering opportunities for Jasper undergraduates and professionals in every field to interact. Through e-mail contacts, alumni visits, student internships and, in many cases, job placements, the Manhattan College family looks after its own. This is a value-added component of a Manhattan education.
As testament to the College’s growing academic reputation, our School of Business has received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, representing the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. It is the hallmark of excellence in management education. The School of Engineering, long recognized for its outstanding programs – and its noted graduates – can boast all six programs with Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology accreditation. The School of Education was recently accredited by the Teacher Education Accrediting Council as well, and is offering cutting-edge courses in every discipline. The masters program, for instance, offers an 18-credit course in Autism Spectrum Disorders, little recognized until recent years.
More than 75% of Manhattan students enrolled in the School of Science, either in the pre-med, chemistry, or veterinary science fields, gain admission to the nation’s top professional schools. The National Resource Council has ranked Manhattan College first in New York among private undergraduate colleges whose alumni have gone on to earn doctorates in the sciences and medicine. The School of Arts has been expanding its offerings to render them more multi-national in nature, including a growing Study Abroad program and active participation in the Model UN program. By providing a forum to discuss global concerns like regional conflicts, human rights, economic development and the environment, students learn the dynamics of multilateral diplomacy and international relations and an appreciation of other cultures. The modern foreign language department has expanded its programs by offering courses in Japanese, and will soon be introducing Arabic language study.
Our Graduates
We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our alumni in their chosen professions – from business leaders, to those in the fields of medicine and law, in engineering, communications, the arts, and education, government and church. They have demonstrated as well that they learned the ethical lessons that were part of their Manhattan education. Nowhere is this more poignantly apparent than in their contributions, both in terms of their expertise and of their compassion, at the World Trade Center site in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy. From our earliest days, Jaspers have always demonstrated their skills and their ethical standards as citizens of the world.
At Manhattan, we believe in preparing our students for successful and productive professional lives. We also believe that it is essential for those same students to have a broad background in the liberal arts if their lives are to be lived to the fullest. We are and always have been a Lasallian Catholic institution, dedicated to educating students with strong moral values, a concern for the community, and a love of independent and critical thinking. This is the identity of Manhattan College and it is rooted in the ideal of Christian love. Our students will play a pivotal role in any future society by working to improve the well being of the world as a whole and the disadvantaged in particular.
