Research and Scholarly Interests:

The modern history of East Central Europe, focusing on the Czech lands of the Habsburg Empire in the nineteenth century and examining questions of nationalism, women's history, and culture.

Publications

Author of The Sokol in the Czech Lands to 1914:  Training for the Nation (Palgrave Press, 2002) and co-editor of Encyclopedia of Ethnicity and Sports in the United States (Greenwood Press, 2000).  Recent articles include "All For One!  One For All!  The Federation of Slavic Sokols and the Failure of Neo-Slavism," Constructing Nationalities in East Central Europe (2005); "Politics on the Parallel Bars: The Role of Gymnastic Clubs in Nineteenth Century Bohemia," Ethnic and National Issues in Russian and East European History (2000); "Ambivalent Patriots:  Czech Culture in the Great War," European Culture in the Great War:  The Arts, Entertainment and Propaganda (1999); and "Choosing Czech Identity in Nineteenth-Century Prague:  The Case of Jindrich Fugner," Nationalities Papers 24 (1996).  Book reviews have appeared in H-Net Online Reviews, Jahrbucher fur Geschichte Osteuropas, German Politics and Society, Nationalities Papers, Austrian History Yearbook and Kosmas: Central and East European Journal.

Other Activities:

Regular presentation of papers on Czech history and culture at scholarly conferences.
