School of Arts

Message from the Dean

Mary Ann O'Donnell, Ph.D.

Welcome to the School of Arts webpages. Even if you are planning to major in education, business, science, or engineering, you will build a foundation for your education, right here. The School of Arts works with students in every area of Manhattan College to help them sharpen their skills of critical reading, critical writing, and critical thinking.

Students who decide to major in one of the areas within the School of Arts have the opportunity to take a wide range of courses with other outstanding students and a faculty known for its exceptional research and devotion to students. The School of Arts offers fourteen majors in the humanities and the social sciences, including three interdisciplinary majors—in International Studies, Peace Studies, and Urban Studies, and the possibility of pursuing a second major or a number of minors and clusters, even in areas outside the humanities and social sciences.

Manhattan College is a Phi Beta Kappa school, with students in both Arts and Science eligible for election to this, the most prestigious honor society in the United States. Manhattan Arts students have the chance to do research with individual professors, earn credit with supervised internships in career areas of interest, and work in service-learning opportunities such as tutoring students in neighborhood schools or working with the elderly in nearby nursing homes or building orphanages in Honduras. Our Model U.N. program is an exciting way for qualified students to explore global issues while learning about another country in depth while working with students from all over the United States. You can join your classmates in Study Abroad semesters all over the world or stay at home to explore the incredible cultural diversity that New York City affords us.

Through our Core Curriculum, Arts students study a wide range of subjects in the arts and sciences that will turn them into informed, confident, ethical, and caring adults so badly needed in today's world.
