School of ArtsPhilosophyGeneral Requirements:The philosophy major sharpens students' ability to critically analyze concepts, assumptions, beliefs, logical errors, and commonly held opinions. It promotes clarity and precision in speaking, comprehension, and writing. Training in philosophy prepares students to perform effectively in any profession, particularly in public service, law, and college teaching. Requirements for a Major in Philosophy:Students majoring in philosophy must take a total of nine courses (27 credits), which normally should include Philosophy 203, one major author course from the ancient period (309 or 310), and one major author course from the modern period (317, 321, 322, 323, or 325). 311 or 312 may be substituted for 203. A minimum grade of C in departmental courses is necessary to fulfill the requirement for the major. Requirements for a Minor in Philosophy:Students in Science, Education, Business, Engineering and those majoring in other Arts disciplines may elect Philosophy as a minor. A minimum of fifteen credits in Philosophy courses that normally should include Philosophy 201 (for non Arts and Sciences students), and one major author course (309, 310, 311, 312, 313, 317, 321, 322, 323 or 325).
