SPECIAL PROGRAMS & Academic ResourcesBranigan Scholars GrantThe Edward Branigan Fund was established in 1976 through the generous contributions of Mr. Branigan and matching gifts from Exxon. Enhanced by additional support from a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant, the Branigan Scholars Fund has provided the financial resources for students to pursue projects independent of their coursework. The aim of this program is to promote undergraduate research in the humanities by awarding several grants per year in excess of $3000 each for student-initiated projects. Each Branigan Scholar works closely with a Manhattan College faculty member, who serves as advisor. The Branigan Grants foster the Manhattan College tradition of strengthening humanities education through the development of students' scholarly interests and goals in close collaboration with members of the faculty. Students enrolled in Manhattan College School of Arts or School of Science, who are not seniors at the time of application, are eligible to apply. The grant may be used to support a creative or traditional research project or to facilitate student participation in a conference or an internship experience. Applicants must submit a description of the project, objectives and work plan, and a letter of reference from the Manhattan College faculty member who will direct the research. The Branigan Scholars Committee selects the award recipients. Edward Vincent Branigan (1916-2002) was a graduate of the Manhattan College Class of 1940. During World War II, he served in the United States Merchant Marine, where he was trained as a marine engineer. After the war, he continued as a marine engineer for Esso Shipping and Humble Oil, now Exxon, until his retirement in 1971.
