School of ScienceBiologyFacilitiesThe Biology Department occupies facilities in both the third and fourth floors of Leo Building as well as several labs in Hayden Hall. The Biology Department Office is on the third floor of Leo Building (Leo 317). There are two predominantly teaching labs are at Leo 316 and 328. Each of these two labs was constructed in 2007 and each is approximately 1500 ft2. There are three predominately research laboratories on the fourth floor. Leo 401 (approximately 1500 ft2) and adjoining facilities (approximately 400 ft2) are for microbiology and animal paleontology. Another lab (Leo 414; approximately 1500 ft2)) on the fourth floor of Leo Building is devoted to genetics/developmental biology. Another lab (Leo 415; approximately 400 ft2) is for ecological research. Many faculty offices are housed on the fourth floor. The department also has two laboratories in Hayden Hall. Hayden 403 (approximately 1200 ft2) is the new Plant Morphogenesis Laboratory. Hayden 410 (approximately 400 ft2)is being constructed into another smaller research laboratory. The department also shares teaching space in Hayden 501 (approximately 1000 ft2). There is also a greenhouse (approximately 1400 ft2) in Leo Building. The department uses a variety of lecture rooms in Leo Building and Hayden Hall. The department has ample equipment and supplies to conduct cutting-edge research engaging our undergraduates. This preparation is an important component for undergraduate biology education. This preparation involves the entire process of scientific investigations that includes learning about a subject including techniques. The building and testing of hypotheses, conducting experiments, analyzing results and evaluating data in the context of previous scientific evidence. Students are involved in all steps of the process. Our students have been awarded a wide array of awards for their research with our faculty.
