John P. Wasacz

Professor of Chemistry

Education:

  • B.S., St. John's University (1965)
  • Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania (1969)
  • (NASA Traineeship, NSF Traineship)
  • Postdoctoral, Columbia University (NSF Faculty Fellowship)

Teaching:

I have enjoyed teaching organic chemistry for over 25 years. One of my present goals is to participate in efforts to revise the organic curriculum at the national level to reflect not only the current state of the art, but also to incorporate newer technologies. Problem solving is an important part of my course, and my classes gather at least once a week to participate in a problem session.

Research:

My research interests have evolved over the past ten years from an interest in the chemistry of the narcotic drugs to the synthesis of uncommon amino acids. Of the approximately twenty five students who have done research in my laboratory most have gone on to graduate, medical or dental schools.

Grants:

Pew Undergraduate Program in Science Education Grant: "Workshop to Examine the Course Content of the Organic Chemistry Lecture," 1993 (see writeup in Chemical and Engineering News, September 5, 1994, pp 39-40).
