Professor of Inorganic and Structural Chemistry

Contact Information:

Education:

  • A.B., University of California at Berkeley
  • M.S., San Jose State College
  • Ph.D., University of Washington

Present Positions:

Teaching:

I enjoy teaching General Chemistry lectures and laboratories, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (includes structure and bonding of transition metal compounds, and group theory), and science courses for non-science majors.

Research:

Physical Inorganic Chemistry; Structural Characterization of micro-Crystalline Materials (e.g., Zeolites); X-Ray Crystallography.

I involve undergraduate students in all aspects of my research work. We work on determining the structures of interesting zeolite-like materials from powder or single-crystal data. Students with a lively three-dimensional imagination (for model building and interpretation of structures) and an interest in computers enjoy this type of research.

Education:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Dr. James A. Ibers at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. from 9/71 to 8/73; Ph.D. 1971, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (Ph.D. mentor: Professor E.C. Lingafelter); Predoctoral Fellow, 9/67-9/68, Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, University of Florence, Italy (Research with Professor L. Sacconi); M.S. (Chemistry) 1966, California State University at San Jose; A.B. (Chemistry) 1964, University of California, Berkeley

Recent Grants and Awards:

  • Manhattan College Sabbatical Leave and Summer Grant for "Non-routine structural analyses of especially interesting zeolite-like materials," awarded for summer 2002 and academic year 2003-04.
