Mathematics & Computer Science

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers degree programs leading to the B.S. and B.A. degrees in Mathematics and in Computer Science. Students in the School of Science may also opt for an academic major in either Mathematics or Computer Science.

Recent innovations in the curriculum for the first two years include the Maple project for calculus: Calculus is taught in a computer laboratory setting, and students use the program Maple to gain insight about calculus concepts, and to model and solve real life problems mathematically, using the computer as a tool. Classes are small, with a maximum of twenty-two in a class, ensuring each student access to a computer and maximum interaction with the instructor.

For students in the School of Science, we offer our Seminar for Mathematics Education. This course will highlight some of the great moments in the history of mathematics, and is an important contribution to the education curriculum. The Seminar for Mathematics Education and An Introduction to Higher Geometry have been designed to meet the needs of the mathematics education major.

In both mathematics and computer science, in addition to required classes, special topics classes are offered to accommodate the interests of the current students. Recent topics classes include Object Oriented Design, in computer science; Topology, Linear Algebra II, and Dynamical Systems, in mathematics.
