Special Programs and Activities

  • This past year students presented papers at several conferences, including the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the Eastern College Science Conference and the Hudson River Mathematics Conference.

  • The highlight of the Sigma Xi induction ceremonies was the poster session at which student inductees presented the results of their undergraduate research.

  • Dr. Kevin Campbell, who graduated in 1973 from Manhattan with a degree in physics, was elected to the National Academy of Science. Dr. Campbell is the Roy J. Carver Chair of   Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Iowa and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. He joins other Manhattan science graduates who have been elected to national academies:

    • Dr. James W. Cooley (1949, mathematics). National Academy of Engineering. Researcher at IBM Watson Research Center

    • Dr. Jerome J. Cuomo (1958, chemistry). National Academy of Engineering. Distinguished Research Professor, North Carolina State University

    • Dr. Thomas Romesser (1971, physics). National Academy of Engineering. Vice President of Technology Development, Northrup Grumman Space Technology.

  • The Catherine and Robert Fenton Chair in Biology was established to foster faculty and student research and to encourage research collaborations among faculty members.
  • Dr. Lance Evans (Biology) was appointed the first Catherine and Robert Fenton Chair in Biology. Dr Evans has published more than 120 refereed journal articles, often as co-author with the more than 100 undergraduate students whose research he has supervised and the numerous faculty colleagues with whom he has collaborated.
