Scholarships: There are few scholarships specifically for undergraduate study abroad. You must apply a year in advance for some, so it is wise to plan ahead if you want to apply. There are scholarships that don't cover all your expenses but can be useful to cover part of it. Check the foreign governments; there are an increasing number of scholarships available to minority and nontraditional students. It is good to check out the following scholarships: The National Security Education Program (NSEP)www.iie.org, American Institute for foreign Study (AIFS) www.aifs.com, The Institute of International Education (www.iie.org/nsep), American Association of University Women www.aauw.org, DAAD-German Academic Exchange Service www.daad.org , Fulbright Scholarships www.iie.org, Rotary International www.rotary.org, College Consortium for International Studies www.ccisabroad.org, Donavan Data Service Inc. Anniversary Scholarship www.donovandata.com, The National Italian American Foundation, www.niaf.org/scholarships, The Council of International Educational Exchange www.ciee.org, The Rhodes Scholarships and The University of Oxford www.rhodesscholar.org.
Manhattan College scholarship money only applies to the MICEFA, Paris and Mexico City Programs (see Sponsored Semester Programs).
Manhattan College is fortunate to be able to offer The Michael '58 and Aimee Kakos Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a Manhattan College student) who is enrolled in a full-time baccalaureate degree program; and has a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 through four semesters of study at Manhattan College. Most importantly, the student shows an interest in learning more about the world and demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of other cultures and peoples.
Financial Aid: Federal Aid can be legally used for study abroad as long as the program you attend has been approved for credit by your home institution. State Aid is similar but comes from your state's tax funds. If you are already using financial aid at at Manhattan College and you remain registered while participating in a study abroad program, that aid can be applied to your foreign studies. Consult the Student Financial Services Offices for specifics on aid money when studying abroad. Before you borrow, think about how you will feel returning from your journey and owing thousands in student loans.
