Support for Endowed Chairs & Professorships
$15 million
Preparing today's students for their future roles requires teachers conversant in the contemporary challenges of their disciplines and who can engage their students in an informed discussion of real-world issues and problems. Recruiting and retaining such accomplished men and women is an increasingly competitive enterprise. Compensation is only one of several critical issues. Moreover, the number of accomplished faculty members in specific disciplines is often limited particularly in newly emerging fields.

At Manhattan, endowed chairs are especially important because they provide the opportunity to acknowlede our outstanding teacher-scholars and thereby attest to Manhattan's standard of excellence. Equally important, these chaired professors mentor their younger facluty colleagues to enable them to reach a similar standard of excellence. The benefits of endowed chairs and professorships are many. In addition to attracting talented new faculty members in specific areas, they also can be used to reward current faculty for scholarly contributions and professional accomplishments in their areas of expertise.

Although the income from the endowment for a chair may not cover the entire cost of the faculty member's salary or other support, it does enable Manhattan to plan intelligently for the future - confident that the basic costs will be met.

Accordingly, as part of the Sesquicentennial Campaign, Manhattan is seeking $15 million to support faculty recruitment and retention in the form of 10 endowed chairs and professorships at a cost of $1.5 million per named chair.
