GOALS

BULLETTo prepare special educators with a sound knowledge base (content, development, and methodology) that will guide their decision making and professional practices.

BULLETTo prepare professionals who understand that becoming and being an effective practitioner is a life-long developmental process.


OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the Graduate Special Education Program each graduate will be able to:

BULLETDemonstrate knowledge of philosophical, historical and legal foundations of Special Education

BULLETUse formal and informal assessment tools to evaluate students and plan instruction

BULLETPlan and implement instruction based upon knowledge of the characteristics of disabled students, community resources, content and curriculum standards

BULLETEmploy a variety of instructional strategies that meet the particular needs of disabled students
 

BULLETUtilize methodologies that provide active engagement in learning, skill development and problem solving

BULLETCreate an environment tat encourages positive social interaction and appropriate behavior

BULLETExhibit professionalism and engage in reflective practices

BULLETStudents will understand the role of research in special education

Management Techniques and Curriculum for the At Risk and Behaviorally Disordered
Psycho Educational Assessment
Practicum in Teaching the At Risk and Special Education Student
Seminar/Internship in Teaching the Student with Disabilities or Seminar on Contemporary Problems in Special Education
plus 9 credits specialization
plus 6 elective credits

  • Management Techniques and Curriculum for the At Risk and Behaviorally Disordered
  • Integrated Learning I:  Social Studies and Language Arts Instruction of the At Risk/Disabled Student (K-8)

  • Integrated Learning II:  Social Studies and Language Arts Instruction for the At Risk/Disabled Student

CERTIFICATION

Upon completion of the Master of Science degree in Special Education, the child abuse requirement and SAFE,  the student will fulfill the academic requirements for provisional certification as a special education teacher.  When students have completed the degree requirements they will be recommended for a provisional certification, or permanent certification, if they have met the NYS regulations for two years of teaching experience and if required, passed the Assessment of Teaching Skills-Performance Video (ATS-P).  The student must file an Application for Certificate with the Office of the Dean of Education in order to be recommended for certification.  This application should be filed prior to graduation.
