Code of Conduct Policy

Manhattan College Library is committed to providing those resources, facilities, and services needed to support the academic work of our students and faculty including an environment conducive to study and research. Consequently, this code of conduct is intended to ensure these benefits in the best interests of our community.

Users of the Manhattan College Library are entitled to have:

Ensuring these entitlements to the Manhattan College Community requires that each user follow the provisions of the code of conduct and responsibly refrain from:

  1. Creating any disturbance or exhibiting any behavior that interferes with normal use of the library, including: rowdiness, noise, lewdness, and use of cellular telephones in quiet areas. Audible rings from cellular phones and pagers should be turned off while owners are in the library. The phones and pagers can be used in the outside vestibule or lobby, not in public staircases.
  2. Bringing food and beverages into the library.
  3. Consuming food or beverages in public areas of the library, including study carrels and group study rooms. Thirteen (13) water fountains are available throughout the library building.
  4. Smoking or use of any tobacco products in the library.
  5. Removing or attempting to remove library materials or property without checking them out or without authorization.
  6. Failing to return materials following the expiration of the loan period and/or on request for return of materials by the library.
  7. Refusing to abide by library regulations governing use of library materials.
  8. Failing to pay the library the value of lost or damaged materials.
  9. Concealing library materials in the library for the exclusive use of an individual or group.
  10. Mutilating library materials by marking, underlining, removing pages or portions of pages, removing binding, removing electronic theft detection devices or barcodes, or in any other way defacing library materials.
  11. Altering computer settings, software or peripherals.
  12. Harassing library staff or patrons.
  13. Being in an unauthorized area of the library, remaining in the library after closing or when requested to leave during emergency situations or drills.
  14. Bringing in skateboards, roller blades, scooters, or bicycles.
  15. Bringing in animals or pets, unless they assist the disabled.

Sanctions

Violations can result in loss of library privileges including access to the building. Serious violations will be referred to the Dean of Students for campus adjudication. Consult Manhattan College, Responsible Use of Computing and Information Services, Policy and Procedures, October 1997.
