Remote Access to Library Databases
Manhattan College Library has a server that provides off-site access to IP-restricted databases such as the ProQuest and EBSCOhost. To access these databases from home or another off-campus location you must use one of the links on the library pages. The main access page is: http://www.manhattan.edu/library/palsgate.html
When you click on the link for a restricted database, our proxy server determines whether or not the request comes from an on-campus computer. If you are not connecting from the college network, a form appears that asks for your library barcode number. Be sure to enter the full number without adding any spaces or punctuation.
For your barcode to work in our system, your library card must be current (unexpired), must be activated (this occurs when you first use it in the library) and your account must not be blocked due to excessive overdues. You can activate your barcoded library card at the circulation desk of the O'Malley Library. When you first activate your library card it may take up to a week for the number to work in our database access server.
If you encounter problems, please contact us by email or call the library at: 718-862-7166. You must provide complete details of the problem.
When reporting a problem with remote access, be sure to include the following information:
- The date and time the problem occurred.
- the exact wording of any error messages you received
- the browser name and version. (Example: Netscape 4.08)
- the operating system you were using. (Example: Windows 98)
If you have JavaScript enabled on your browser, you can check
your browser version and settings.
Some technical
aspects of remote access
- For remote access, you will
need a computer that is connected to the Internet. The library does not
offer direct dial-up access. For most users, this will mean connecting through
a for-fee Internet Service Provider such as America
Online, Optimum Online, or Road Runner. You may also be able to access the internet from an advertising-supported
free service, such as Juno
or Netzero.
- We highly recommend using a current version of one of the major internet browsers. This would include Microsoft's Internet Explorer version 6 or higher, Netscape Navigator version 7 or higher or a current version of Mozilla Firefox (Firefox is very similar to Netscape but it loads faster and allows users to block advertisements and unrequested pop-up windows.) While other browsers, such as Opera, may work with our databases, we only support these three. Most of our testing is done with Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Users with older web browsers should upgrade to current versions for best results.
- For off-campus access, your web browser must be set up to accept cookies. For some of our databases you must also have JavaScript enabled. These settings are controlled by the user options and preferences in your web browser.
In Internet Explorer version 6.0:

In Firefox v0.9:

- To access full-text in some
of the databases, you must have an Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin installed.

website
