Top Manhattan College Students Inducted Into Prestigious Epsilon Sigma Pi Honor Society

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College recently inducted its top students into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society. Students, mainly seniors, were recognized for their academic achievement during the College’s annual Fall Honors Convocation, held on Sunday, Oct. 14 in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers.

Membership in Epsilon Sigma Pi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be earned by a Manhattan College student. Only students who have earned a 3.5 average (on a 4.0 scale) for six consecutive semesters with no academic failures are inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi. Students who have achieved this status typically are inducted in the beginning of their senior year.

During the ceremony, an honorary Doctor of Science was awarded to alumnus George J. Galasso `54, former associate director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and former executive director of the Foundation for NIH Research.

In his acceptance speech, Galasso challenged the students to seek out risk and embrace the opportunities they are given during their careers.

“You may make some mistakes, but learn from them and go on. Find out what you really enjoy doing and pursue it to the fullest,” he said. “Whatever you do, wherever you go, have confidence in yourselves, work energetically to make a positive personal impact to help improve the human condition, and in so doing reap the ultimate satisfaction.”

Galasso became associate professor of microbiology in 1964 at the University of Virginia Medical School, where he conducted research and taught virology. Four years later, he was accepted into the grants associates program of the NIH, a highly selective training program for health science administrators, and began his career as an administrator of scientific programs.

In 1969, Galasso was asked to initiate an antiviral research program for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He also was a leader in the interferon clinical trials and showed the efficacy of interferon in hepatitis, which led to its use against cancer. Appointed chief of the infectious diseases branch in 1973 with responsibility for development of vaccines and antivirals to combat all infectious diseases, Galasso later served as associate director for extramural programs of the NIH. He is the authohr of nearly 100 scientific articles and reviews.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering.
