TOP MANHATTAN COLLEGE STUDENTS INDUCTED INTO PRESTIGIOUS EPSILON SIGMA PI HONOR SOCIETYRIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College has recently inducted its top students into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society. Students, mainly seniors, were recognized for their academic achievement during the College’s annual Fall Honors Convocation, held on Sunday, October 16 in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. Membership in Epsilon Sigma Pi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be earned by a Manhattan College student. Only students who have earned a 3.5 average (on a 4.0 scale) for six consecutive semesters with no academic failures are inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi. Students who have achieved this status typically are inducted in the beginning of their senior year. During the ceremony, an honorary Doctor of Science degree was awarded to alumnus Dr. William G. Clancy ’63, the renowned orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist. In his acceptance speech, Clancy shared with students his own Manhattan College experiences and professional achievements. He also underscored the value of attending a Catholic institution. “Your education at a Catholic college will prepare you for the greatest of your challenges when you graduate,” said Clancy. “Those challenges will be to your ethics, honesty and integrity. Although the world is obviously not entirely black or white, many would have you believe that there is a tremendous gray area … Believe me, that is not true. The pressures that will be put on you will make it appear so, but honesty and integrity have no gray areas.” Clancy, who completed his residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, is a physician with Orthopaedic Associates of Aspen and Glenwood in Colorado. Considered by his peers to be a leading knee surgeon, the Brooklyn native has invented several surgical procedures and is a past president of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (2000), as well as a recipient of the prestigious George D. Rovere Education Award for excellence in teaching. Clancy, a former track and field athlete, has served as the team orthopedic surgeon at several competitions, including the U.S. Hockey Team’s gold medal win at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Manhattan College, founded in 1853, is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering.
