Notable Expert on Public Financial Institutions Will Deliver Gargano Lecture at Manhattan College on April 18

Thomas Stanton will discuss why some firms thrived and others failed following the recent economic collapse

Thomas Stanton, a fellow of the Center for the Study of American Government at The Johns Hopkins University and an expert legal authority on public financial institutions, will deliver the annual Gargano Lecture at Manhattan College on April 18. The topic of the lecture comes from the title of his most recent book, Why Some Firms Thrive While Others Fail: Governance and Management Lessons From the Crisis.

The lecture will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the O’Malley Library Alumni Room. It is free and open to the public.

Stanton's academic, legal and policy experience relates to the capacity of public institutions to deliver services effectively, with specialties relating to federal credit and benefits programs, government corporations and financial regulation. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Academy of Public Administration, and for many years he was chairman of the academy’s Standing Panel on Executive Organization and Management. Stanton currently serves on the board of the Association of Federal Enterprise Risk Management, and in 2010, he served on the senior staff of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, where he focused on governance and risk management, among other issues.

Stanton’s writings on public administration have appeared in publications including Public Administration Review, The Administrative Law Journal, American Banker and the Wall Street Journal.

He coedited Making Government Manageable: Executive Organization and Management in the 21st Century, and he edited Meeting the Challenge of 9/11: Blueprints for Effective Government.

Manhattan College economics and finance professor Charles Geisst, Ph.D., a prominent historian of Wall Street and author of many books including, most recently, Beggar Thy Neighbor: A History of Usury and Debt, will be the master of ceremonies and will moderate a Q-and-A session following the lecture.

Charles A. Gargano ’79, former chairman and commissioner of Empire State Development and vice chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was a member of the Manhattan College board of trustees and in 2009 established the Ambassador Charles A. Gargano ’79 Endowed Chair in Global Economics.
