Fall Honors Convocation Honors Alumnus

Br. Thomas Scanlan & Robert Galasso

Dr. George Galasso '54, former associate director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and former executive director of the Foundation for NIH Research, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science at this year's Fall Honors Convocation, held on Oct. 14 in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. During the ceremony, nearly 140 seniors were recognized for their academic excellence and inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society. Induction into Epsilon Sigma Pi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be earned by a Manhattan College student. Read

College Names New
Director of Alumni Relations

Manhattan College has named Ellen Kiernan as its new director of alumni relations. Kiernan joins the College from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she served as director of alumni relations. She has spent her entire professional career in higher education administration, including positions at New York University (NYU), SUNY Stony Brook, Long Island University and Adelphi University. Local Holocaust Survivors
To Speak at Manhattan College

Holocaust survivors Martin Spett and Gisela Glaser will discuss their experiences at Manhattan College on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium as the Holocaust Resource Center presents Survivors and Their Stories. Read

Lasallian Thursday

Dr. William Merriman, dean of the school of education; Dr. Yassir Samra, assistant professor of management; and Lois Harr, director of campus ministry and social action, will speak during the Nov. 8 Lasallian Thursday luncheon at 12:20 p.m. in the Murray Room of Thomas Hall. They will discuss their recent experiences at the Lasallian Social Justice Institute in El Paso, Texas, where the topic is border issues, and in San Francisco, where the focus is on homelessness. The event is open to the entire Manhattan College community.

College Partners With ConEd
for New Master's Program

Manhattan College's school of engineering, in conjunction with Consolidated Edison, Inc. (Con Edison) introduced its Master of Science in electrical or mechanical engineering program during a ceremony on Sept. 24 in the Fischbach Room of Leo Hall. Read

Cerezo Named Director of Security

Juan Cerezo, a member of the Manhattan College community for more than a decade, has been named the new director of security. Cerezo joined the College in 1996 following a distinguished 25-year career in the New York City Police Department. Read

FACULTY

College Names First Communication Department Chair

Dr. Thom Gencarelli has been named associate professor and the first chair of Manhattan College's new communication department. The department, which will launch for the fall 2008 semester, will offer courses in three concentrations: broadcasting/telecommunications, journalism and corporate communication. Read

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Nicholas J. De Lillo, professor of mathematics and computer science, served as a session chair and reviewed three papers for the 23rd Annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, Eastern Conference at St. Joseph's College this past October.

Dr. Robert Sharp, professor of environmental engineering, published the paper “Effects of Starvation on Bacterial Transport Through Porous Media” in the Elsevier Press peer-reviewed Journal of Advances in Water Resources.

Dr. Robert M. Geraci, assistant professor of religious studies, published the paper “Cultural Prestige: Popular Science Robotics as Religion/Science Hybrid” in the book Reconfigurations: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Religion in a Post-Secular Society.

Peter Quinn '69 To Speak at
NYC Alumni Club on Nov. 8

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2007, the New York City Alumni Club will be hosting a networking reception at the New York Life Building from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The event will feature a presentation by alumnus Peter Quinn '69, a noted author of such works as The Banished Children of Eve and Looking for Jimmy: A Search for Irish America. Eight To Be Inducted Into
the Athletic Hall of Fame

The Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members during the 29th annual induction ceremony to be held on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 4:45 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The inductees are: men's basketball stars Jamal Marshall '95 and V. Grady O'Malley '69; track and field standouts Ignatius Rienzo '50, John Corry '62 and David Frazier '94; swimmer Danielle Gelsomino '95; softball coach Paul Mazzei; and baseball pioneer Luis Castro, class of 1900, who is widely regarded as the first Hispanic to play major league baseball with the 1902 Philadelphia Athletics. Gaelic Park Re-Opens

After receiving a face-lift that included a new playing surface, Gaelic Park re-opened on Sept. 5 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony prior to the women's soccer match between the Jaspers and the University of Albany. Gaelic Park now features a FieldTurf surface, as well as light stanchions, which allow for night competitions and practices. Read

Hoops Season on Tap

The Manhattan College's men's basketball team, in its second season under the leadership of coach Barry Rohrssen, will kick off the 2007-08 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a road contest at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The women's squad takes the floor one day earlier at Seton Hall University. Read
