NEWS Manhattan College Partners With WCBS-TV To Sponsor Special Television Advertising and Web Programming Around Inauguration Manhattan College has partnered with WCBS-TV New York on a special sponsorship of television advertising and web programming scheduled to cover the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama. As part of the agreement, the College will be receiving 1) sponsorship of 25 vignettes that will run between Jan. 5-20. The 30-second spots, produced by WCBS-TV, look back at past presidential inaugurations; 2) ten 30-second commercials to air on Jan. 20, prior to the inauguration. Commercials to be included are Manhattan Master Builders, What America Needs, Teaching the Leaders of Tomorrow, and two Best of Both Worlds spots. The commercials will run 10 times during the day’s coverage of the inauguration; 3) sponsorship of the “Countdown to Inauguration” clock on the WCBS-TV home page at Here; 4) total sponsorship of the WCBS-TV politics Web page Here for the month of January; 5) exclusive sponsorship of the WCBS-TV home page on Jan. 20. College Will Honor Syska Hennessy Group Chairman at De La Salle Dinner
Manhattan College will present John Magliano ’66, chairman of Syska Hennessy Group, Inc., with the De La Salle Medal at the College’s annual fundraising dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009. The ceremony will be held at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. Read. Magliano, a licensed professional engineer in 12 states, joined Syska Hennessy Group, one of the country’s leading consulting, engineering, technology and construction firms, in 1970, after he graduated from the College with a degree in electrical engineering and served a four-year tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force. School of Business Receives Extension of Accreditation The school of business at Manhattan College has received an extension of accreditation from The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, the premier accrediting agency for business programs worldwide. Of the 555 institutions throughout the world to hold AACSB accreditation, only 42 of them are undergraduate-only programs such as Manhattan. The College received its initial accreditation by AACSB in 2004. Manhattan’s achievement will be recognized at the AACSB International Conference and Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., in April. Read.
ON CAMPUS New Scholarships Strengthen Scholarship endowment always has been a priority at Manhattan, since the early days when the Christian Brothers’ mission was to offer excellence in education to gifted young people regardless of their financial circumstances. These young people included children of immigrants who otherwise might not have had such opportunities. Many generations of our graduates, who have attained prominence in every field, attest to the enduring value of that mission. Scholarships established in memory of a loved one are doubly meaningful. There is no better way to pay homage to a revered family member or friend than to memorialize his/her name in perpetuity. For the recipient, a scholarship award is possibly the greatest gift a young person can receive and opportunity to develop talents that might not have been possible without this financial aid. Four recently established memorial scholarships allow the College to offer grants to a number of talented and deserving young students. Read.
Men’s Lacrosse Supports The Manhattan College men’s lacrosse team participated in the Pledge To Take the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics New York (SONY) Chapter. On Saturday, Dec. 6, some 40 players from the squad traveled to Rye Playland and the Long Island Sound to be among the thousands of brave souls with warm hearts across the state who plunged into winter waters to show their support and raise money for the Special Olympics. The team raised $2,000 for the event toward the total of $46,000. Read.
Relay For Life Cancer Walk The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an overnight event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, will return to Manhattan College for its sixth year on Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 3:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m. in Draddy Gymnasium. The event has become a school and community favorite, bringing students together for the common cause of fighting cancer. We hope to raise even more money than in past years and have set our goal at $50,000 to help the estimated 97,000 New Yorkers and 1 million Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Let It Snow On days when classes must be canceled because of snow conditions, the following radio stations will broadcast announcements: WCBS AM 880 and WINS AM 1010. In addition, a recorded message can also be accessed at the College’s telephone number (718) 862-7013. Faculty, employees and commuting students should use this number. At times when this recording is played, the number is a “listen only” extension and will not accept messages. The Manhattan College Web site also will display cancellations under the Calendars link. Those who have signed up for the e2campus emergency system will automatically receive notification. Information will be relayed to the residence halls through the security guards and residence directors. We ask that resident students not call the switchboard. If classes must be canceled during the day, information will be relayed by audix on the College’s telephone system and on the radio stations listed above.
FACULTY/STAFF Marketing Professors Contribute Dr. Jonathan Hartman and Dr. Yassir Samra, assistant professors of marketing, published the paper “Crisis Management: An Empirical Investigation of the Effects of Improvisation on New Product Development in the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Industries” in the journal Insights to a Changing World. In addition, Hartman and Samra published “Effect on an Improvisational Approach to New Product Development During a Crisis: An Empirical Study of NPD Teams in the Field of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering,” which Samra presented at the proceeding of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in Philadelphia this past November.
Faculty and Staff Accomplishments Dr. Robert Sharp, professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been awarded two research grants from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to study the impacts of chloramines on metal corrosion and leaching in water distribution systems. The first award is for $49,500 to continue an ongoing disinfection research project. The second award for $88,000 is for the study of nitrification in distribution systems. The money from these two projects will be used to support graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the civil and environmental engineering departments. Dr. David Shefferman, assistant professor of religious studies, presented the paper “Transforming Tourism: Religion, Visual Culture and the Exuberance of Cuban State Spectacle” at the American Academy of Religion’s annual meeting in Chicago this past November. Dr. Nada Marie Assaf-Anid, professor of chemical engineering, served as programming board chair for the Environmental Division at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Centennial Meeting in Philadelphia this past November. She chaired three sessions: One Hundred Years of Environmental Law and Policy, Water and Waste, and Inorganic Contaminants in Water. For more faculty and staff accomplishments, click Here.

ALUMNI Service Trip Planned to During the week of Jan. 11-18, a group of student and faculty volunteers from Manhattan College will travel to New Orleans to work with Project Helping Hands, a subsidiary of Catholic Charities devoted to rebuilding the hurricane-ravaged city, particularly the Ninth Ward. SPORTS Jaspers Host Iraq War The Manhattan College athletic department hosted Iraq War Veterans Appreciation Day at its men’s basketball contest with American University on Dec. 29. All veterans and their families received complimentary tickets to the game. The event was inspired by head coach Barry Rohrssen and American’s coach Jeff Jones’ participation in Operation Hardwood this past summer. Operation Hardwood is a goodwill initiative sponsored by the United Service Organization and Armed Forces Entertainment. Rohrssen and Jones joined a group of Division I head basketball coaches in August for the fifth installment of this mission. The team of coaches made visits to military hospitals in the nation’s capital to boost the spirits of our wounded warriors, before traveling halfway around the world to bring a taste of home to American military personnel stationed in the Persian Gulf Region.
Men’s Hoops Squad The Manhattan College men’s basketball team will begin a key four-game homestand against MAAC opponents on Friday, Jan. 9 against Marist. In fact, the Jaspers won’t play a true road game again until early February. Six of their next seven contests will take place in Draddy Gymansium, with the exception being a Jan. 24 encounter with Iona at Madison Square Garden. For more basketball news, click Here.
Women’s Basketball’s Lindsey Loutsenhizer ’12 Earns MAAC Rookie of the Week Honors Manhattan College freshman forward Lindsey Loutsenhizer ’12 was named the MAAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for Dec. 15-21. She was honored after averaging 11 points and 6.3 rebounds in games against Stony Brook, Portland and Portland State. Read.
Baseball’s Kevin Nieto ’10 Is Named to 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List
Outfielder Kevin Nieto ’10 was recently named to the preseason 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch List. The two-time All-MAAC selection is a candidate for the award presented to the top collegiate baseball player. Nieto was named to the First Team All-MAAC last season after ranking atop the conference in several statistical categories, including a league-best .386 batting average. Read.
