Television Ad Campaign Reaches Large Audience on Inauguration Day

Manhattan College’s partnership with WCBS-TV New York on a special sponsorship of television advertising and Web programming that covered the Jan. 20 inauguration of President Barack Obama was a huge success. More than 6 million households viewed the College’s television commercials and sponsorships, including 1.8 million households on Inauguration Day. The WCBS-TV Web site received 20 million page viewers while Manhattan was the sponsor, and the College garnered 1,968 “click throughs” to its home page, which breaks out to a .09 click-through rate, which is 50 percent above the industry standard.

 

College Raises $1 Million at
De La Salle Medal Dinner

De La Salle

The 2009 De La Salle Medal Dinner raised more than $1 million, among the highest totals in the event’s 33-year history. A crowd of 620 attendees came to The Waldorf=Astoria on Jan. 21 to honor John Magliano ’66, chairman of Syska Hennessy Group, who received the College’s De La Salle Medal. During his 38 years with Syska Hennessy, Magliano has served as principal-in-charge of many of its high-profile clients and projects, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the United Nations and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The dinner’s proceeds are applied to academic and cocurricular programs, scholarship assistance and library resources. Read.

 

Influential Journalist James
Brady ’50 Passes Away at 80

Brady

James Brady ’50, an influential New York City author and journalist who received an honorary degree from Manhattan College in 1995, passed away on Jan. 26. He was 80. Brady wrote columns for Advertising Age and Crain’s New York Business and was the long-time author of Parade’s celebrity column In Step With. Credited with helping to start the Page Six gossip column at the New York Post, he spent time as publisher of Women’s Wear Daily and authored several books, including The Coldest War (1990), a memoir of his time as a Marine in the Korean War. Brady received a Doctor of Humane Letters at Manhattan’s 1995 Winter Commencement. Read.

Adult Degree Completion
Program Targets Working Adults

With classes beginning on Feb. 23, now is the time for working adults who have long contemplated returning to school to complete an undergraduate degree to take the first step toward this goal. Author Hooman Majd To Speak
About Iran at Manhattan College

Best-selling author and journalist Hooman Majd, a new voice on Iran, one of the United States’ top foreign policy concerns, will speak at Manhattan College on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the William J. Scala Academy Room of Leo Hall. The event is free and open to the public. A resident of New York City, Majd is the author of The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran, a New York Times best-seller. The book, which spent time as the No. 1 foreign policy book and the No. 1 book on Islam on Amazon.com, is a critical but affectionate portrait of Iranian politics and culture. It attempts to explain Iran’s history and quirks to Western observers. Read.

 

Holocaust Resource Center
Welcomes Dr. Ben Kiernan

Dr. Ben Kiernan, author and editor of numerous works on recent events in Southeast Asia, will speak at Manhattan College on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event, presented by the Holocaust Resource Center, is free and open to the public. Kiernan, the Whitney Griswold Professor of History and director of the influential genocide studies program at Yale University, will deliver the lecture Genocide in World History. It is based on his award-winning book Blood and Soil: A World History of Genocide and Extermination from Sparta to Darfur (2007). Read.

 

American Legacy Editor and
Tuskegee Airmen Visit Highlights
Black History Month

Audrey Peterson, editor of American Legacy, the quarterly magazine celebrating African American history and culture, will speak about the Harlem Renaissance at Manhattan College as part of Black History Month on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event is open to all members of the Manhattan College community. Prior to assuming her current position in 1999, Peterson was an editor at Reader’s Digest General Books, where she worked on such historical titles as the Atlas of American and our Glorious Century among other books.

On Thursday, Feb. 26 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the O'Malley Library, members of the Tuskegee Airmen will visit campus. These brave, groundbreaking aviators, who fought in World War II while fighting racism at the same time, will share their stories. Please R.S.V.P. if you plan to attend to alumni@manhattan.edu. Energy Crisis Lecture
Highlights Engineers Week

Dr. Graham Walker, professor of mechanical engineering, will deliver the public lecture Engineering Solutions to the Upcoming Energy Crisis on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room of Leo Hall. The lecture highlights the school of engineering’s Engineers Week, scheduled for Feb. 15-21. Walker’s presentation will outline global climate change issues and present the engineering solutions that are available today, along with the pros and cons associated with various solutions to the problem. Relay For Life Cancer Walk

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an overnight event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, will return to Manhattan College for its sixth year on Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 3:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m. in Draddy Gymnasium. The event has become a school and community favorite, bringing students together for the common cause of fighting cancer. We hope to raise even more money than in past years and have set our goal at $50,000 to help the estimated 97,000 New Yorkers and 1 million Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.  For more information, e-mail relayforlife@manhattan.edu or click Here.

Manhattan College History
Professor Authors New Book on Golf

Dr. George Kirsch, professor of history at Manhattan College, is the author of the new book Golf in America, a concise social history of golf in the United States from the 1880s to the present. To read a short excerpt from the book, click Here. Kirsch is also the author of Baseball and Cricket: The Creation of American Team Sports, 1838-72; Baseball in Blue and Gray: the National Pastime During the Civil War; editor of volumes three and four of Sports in North America: A Documentary History; and co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Ethnicity and Sports in the United States.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Nada Marie Assaf-Anid, professor of chemical engineering, served as programming board chair for the Environmental Division at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Centennial Meeting in Philadelphia this past November. She chaired three sessions: One Hundred Years of Environmental Law and Policy; Water and Waste; and Inorganic Contaminants in Water.

Dr. Jonathan Hartman and Dr. Yassir Samra, assistant professors of marketing, published the paper “Crisis Management: An Empirical Investigation of the Effects of Improvisation on New Product Development in the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Industries” in the journal Insights to a Changing World.

Dr. Claudia Setzer, professor of religious studies, presented the paper “Woman Learners in the Ancient World” at the Columbia University New Testament Seminar this past September.

Dr. Natalia Imperatori-Lee, assistant professor of religious studies, presented the paper “The Significance of Mestizaje in 21st Century Theology” at L’Institut Catholique de Paris in Paris, France, this past October.

Hoops Squads Embark on
Regular Season’s Final Month

Basketball

With the MAAC Tournament getting underway in exactly one month, the Manhattan College men’s and women’s basketball teams enter the regular season’s final month with some key games on the horizon. Both squads welcome archrival Iona to Draddy Gym on Monday, Feb. 9. The men’s squad was recently scheduled to meet William & Mary in ESPNU’s BracketBuster match-up on Feb. 21 in Williamsburg, Va. Aliann Pompey ’04 Runs World’s Fastest Indoor 400 Meters at
New Balance Meet

Manhattan College graduate Aliann Pompey ’04 cruised to a 51.85-second victory in the indoor 400-meter race at the 14th New Balance Games at New York’s Armory’s Track and Field Center on Jan. 24. The three-time Olympian from Guyana torched the field on her home turf, as she trains at the Armory with Joe Ryan, her coach in college and still the current Manhattan College assistant track and field coach. Pompey, a former NCAA indoor champion, was an Olympic semifinalist in the 400 meters in Beijing last year.

 

Baseball Squad Inks Four
During Early Signing Period

Manhattan head baseball coach Kevin Leighton announced the receipt of four National Letters of Intent during the NCAA’s early signing period. High school seniors Nick Camastro (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington), a 5-foot-11-inch shortstop, Mike Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus), a 5-foot-10-inch pitcher,  Kyle Murphy (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross), a 6-foot-3-inch shortstop, and John Soldinger (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore), a 6-foot-2-inch pitcher, confirmed their decision to attend Manhattan College beginning next fall. Manhattan Athletics Expands JasperVision Platform

The Manhattan College athletic department has expanded JasperVision, its online video platform, for the 2008-09 academic year. Read. All men’s and women’s basketball games, along with select fall and spring home athletic contests, will stream live exclusively at GoJaspers.com. JasperVision is the only online destination for live and on-demand streaming video for Manhattan College patrons.
