College Prepares for Inauguration of Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D.

Preparations are underway for the inauguration of Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., as Manhattan College’s 19th president. The installation ceremony will take place in Draddy Gymnasium on Wednesday, Oct. 28, the culmination of a weeklong series of events to celebrate the leadership transition. The theme of the week is The Work is Yours: Work, Career and Vocation in Lasallian Catholic Education. A special Web site devoted to inauguration events is currently in development and will be posted in mid-September. Festivities begin with an opening Mass and reception on Friday, Oct. 23, continue with the student inaugural ball later that evening and the Fall Honors Convocation on the following Monday. There also will be a Lasallian Academic Symposium and campus concert (for a complete list of events see calendar below).

 

Undergraduate Engineering Programs Reaccredited by ABET

Manhattan College’s six undergraduate engineering programs – chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental and mechanical – have been reaccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology. In addition to the continued accreditation of the undergraduate programs, the College has received accreditation for its master’s of degree in environmental engineering. The accreditation of the master’s degree is retroactive to Oct. 1, 2007. Accreditation by ABET – the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology – is considered the gold standard for engineering programs and is based on numerous factors, including faculty quality, facilities and success of students in achieving stated program outcomes. In Memoriam

Brother Luke Salm, professor emeritus of religious studies and a beloved member of the Manhattan College community for more than a half century, passed away on Monday. He was 88. Salm was a past president of the Catholic Theological Society and delegate to the 39th, 40th, 41st and 42nd General Chapters of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. A native of Albany, N.Y., he graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in that city and received his bachelor’s, master’s and a licentiate in theology from The Catholic University of America. A member of Manhattan’s faculty since 1955, Salm also taught at Maryknoll Seminary, St. Mary’s College in California, and De La Salle College in Washington, D.C. He began his teaching career at La Salle Academy in New York City in 1945. A prolific writer, Salm served for 10 years as the editor of Proceedings of the Catholic Theological Society of America and Proceedings of the Society of Catholic College Teachers of Sacred Doctrine. In addition to numerous articles on theology and religious life, he authored 10 books, most of them dealing with the history of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, including the biography of the founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, entitled The Work is Yours: The Life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. Popular Tenor Salvatore Chiarelli
To Perform at Manhattan College

Popular tenor and New York City native Salvatore Chiarelli will perform at Manhattan College on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 12:00 p.m in Smith Auditorium. He will be joined by professional soprano Elga Johannes. The event, which is sponsored by Manhattan’s advisory committee on diversity, will feature an afternoon of Italian/Neapolitan songs, Italian opera, American love ballards and musical theater. Chiarelli vocally trained in both Italy and New York for the opera and has performed extensively on the stages of both North America and Europe. He has been heard on television, radio and satellite TV, reaching 75 countries and has also done two 60-minute concert specials for Westchester Cablevision Channel 74 earlier this year. In 2008, Chiarelli began an East Coast concert tour as a soloist, stopping in more than 100 cities and towns. His live June 23rd luncheon show at Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester, N.Y., was aired extensively on local cable for the months of July and August. Chiarelli’s 2006 CD Due Terre, Un Cuore includes 15 tracks of opera, Neapolitan songs and musical theater.

 

College Hosts Premiere of Film on Evolution of Mexican-American Music

Manhattan College will host the premiere of the film The Chicano Wave/La Onda Chicana, a documentary which explores the evolution of Mexican-American music. The event, presented by the history department, modern foreign languages and the provost’s office in celebration of Latino Heritage Month, will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10 in the Rodriguez Room of Miguel Hall. The film, to be broadcast nationally in October as part of the four-hour series Latin Music USA, examines the struggle of Chicano artists – among them Ritchie Valens, Freddie Fender, Los Lobos, Linda Ronstadt and Selena – against discrimination and their move from the fringes to the national stage, profoundly influencing American popular music in the process. Slave Hunter Author Aaron Cohen Visits Manhattan College

Aaron Cohen, the author of Slave Hunter, will read from his acclaimed book on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event is part of Freedom Week, which aims to raise awareness of modern-day slavery. Slave Hunter recounts Cohen’s firsthand experiences as a rocker who became an anti-slavery activist working to free victims from bondage around the world. The incredible odyssey follows him from his California rock-star life in the company of legendary musicians all the way to the war zones, refugee camps and brothels of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. In these places, he takes on treacherous rescue missions in search of modern-day slaves and lays bare the secrets behind trafficking networks. Read. Manhattan College Economics Professor Authors New Book on America’s Credit Crisis

Dr. Charles Geisst, who holds the Charles A. Gargano Chair in Global Economics at Manhattan College, is the author of the new book Collateral Damaged: The Marketing of Consumer Debt to America, which examines the policy implications of the credit crisis and explains how the United States can fix the issue. Geisst has written 18 books on finance and economics, many of which have appeared on the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek and New York Times best-seller lists. He is a frequent guest on radio and television talk shows, valued for his opinions on finance and business.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Anirban De, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, is currently a visiting faculty scholar in the school of civil engineering at the University of Sydney, Australia, during his sabbatical leave from Manhattan College. He participates in collaborative research, curriculum development and lecturing in environmental geotechnics. Read.

Dr. Adam Koehler, assistant professor of English, is the co-editor of Avery, a journal of fiction, which will be presented at the Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday, Sept. 13. The festival is a free public event presenting an array of literary stars and emerging authors. For more information, click Here.

Dr. Pamela Chasek, associate professor of government and director of the international studies program, was named by the National Women’s History Project as one of the honorees for 2009’s National Women’s History Month in March. She was recognized in part for 22 years of passionate commitment, working to save the planet in her writing and in her work planning a climate change awareness campaign for the National Wildlife Foundation in the 1980s.

Alumni Men’s Retreat

This year is the 18th anniversary of the annual reality retreat at the Passionist Spiritual Center (5801 Palisade Ave., Riverdale, N.Y.), which will be held Sept. 25-27. The retreat spans 36 hours from 6:00 p.m. on Friday until noon on Sunday. The founding purpose of these retreats is to bring together alumni and friends of the College for an extended period to listen to gifted speakers and hear presentations based on a theme. Catholic Charities Networking Mixer

The Catholic Charities Junior Board is hosting a networking event on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at Sutton Place, 2nd Floor (Second Ave. and 54th St.) from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Recent graduates of Manhattan College are invited to attend the event. Manhattan Athletic Department Expands Multimedia Platforms
for 2009-10

The Manhattan College athletic department has announced the expansion of its multimedia platforms for the 2009-10 academic year. The department has expanded its JasperVision live video broadcast package at GoJaspers.com. In addition, Jasper fans can now follow all the happenings of Manhattan’s 19 Division I teams via Twitter and Facebook. The comprehensive JasperVision broadcast schedule will begin this fall with more than 25 live events, as well as all men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball contests. Additionally, athletic events also will be streamed this spring at Gaelic Park. Read.

 

Men’s Basketball Announces Nonconference Schedule

Manhattan College has released the complete 2009-10 men’s basketball nonconference schedule, which features a meeting with Southeastern Conference contender Vanderbilt and rematches with 2009 NCAA Tournament participants American University and Morgan State. The Jaspers add Florida Atlantic to the slate and will host a home contest for the annual ESPNU Bracketbuster series in February. Read. The regular season begins on Saturday, Nov. 14 against New Jersey Institute of Technology in Draddy Gymnasium.

 

Tom Pardalis Named Softball Coach

Manhattan College named Tom Pardalis head softball coach on Aug. 17. A 37-year coaching veteran, Pardalis was an assistant at Marist when the Red Foxes won the MAAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, and has been a collegiate assistant coach for the past six years. Most recently, he was an assistant at Western Connecticut State University, helping the Colonials win the 2007 ECAC Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2008. Also in 2008, he coached the Little East Conference Pitcher of the Year and four all-conference players.
