Manhattan Hosts Historic
Presidential Inauguration

Manhattan College will inaugurate Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., as its 19th president on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The installation ceremony, the culmination of a weeklong series of events under the theme The Work is Yours: Work, Career & Vocation in Lasallian Catholic Education, will take place in the College’s Draddy Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. O'Donnell, who began his position on July 1, is the first layperson to serve as president in the 156-year history of Manhattan College. College Honors Alum at
Fall Honors Convocation

Neuhauser

John J. Neuhauser ’64, Ph.D., president of Saint Michael’s College, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science at Manhattan College’s Fall Honors Convocation on Monday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. The event is part of a weeklong celebration marking the installation of Dr. Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., as Manhattan’s 19th president. During the ceremony, nearly 150 seniors will be recognized for their academic excellence and inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society. Induction into Epsilon Sigma Pi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be earned by a Manhattan College student. A native of New York City, Neuhauser earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan and master’s and doctorate degrees in operations research and statistics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was appointed to the presidency of Saint Michael’s as of Aug. 1, 2007. Read.

Costello Lecture Features
Brooklyn College Professor

Dr. Margaret King, professor of history at Brooklyn College and the graduate center of the City University of New York, will deliver the eighth annual Costello Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 4:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. A Renaissance specialist, King has published numerous works on the history of women and gender. Her 1994 book, The Death of the Child Valerio Marcello, received the Helen and Howard Marraro Prize from the American Historical Associate for the best book in Italian history, as did her 1986 book Venetian Humanism in an Age of Patrician Dominance. The lecture series is named for Brother Casimir Gabriel Costello, F.S.C., former dean of the College. King’s lecture, Mothers of the Renaissance is sponsored by the history department, the school of arts and the women and gender studies cluster. It is open to the entire Manhattan College community, including alumni. Johnson

Author Steven Johnson will address the Manhattan College community about his book Everything Bad is Good for You: How Today’s Popular Culture is Actually Making Us Smarter (2005), on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. Johnson is the best-selling author of six books on the intersection of science, technology and personal experience. His writings have influenced everything from the way political campaigns use the Internet, to cutting-edge ideas in urban planning and the battle against 21st-century terrorism. Johnson is also a contributing editor for Wired magazine and a monthly columnist for Discover magazine. He is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University’s department of journalism and lectures widely on technological, scientific and cultural issues to both corporate and educational institutions. Middlebury College Professor To Lecture at Manhattan

Dr. Murray Dry, the Charles A. Dana Professor of Political Science at Middlebury College, will deliver the lecture Same Sex Marriage and the Constitution: Exploring the Issues of Federalism and the Separation of Powers on Monday, Oct. 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the Rodriguez Room (Miguel 311). The event, co-sponsored by the government, communication, religious studies and sociology departments, is free and open to the public. Dry is on leave this year in New York, teaching constitutional law at Yeshiva College and working on a book on same sex marriage and the law. He is the author of the 2004 book Civil Peace and the Quest for Truth: The First amendment Freedoms in Political Philosophy and American Constitutionalism, as well as numerous articles and book chapters on the American founding, the first amendment, federalism and the separation of powers. Hispanic Heritage Celebration Welcomes Lance Rios

Manhattan College’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will feature Lance Rios, founder of the Facebook phenomenon Being Latino. Rios will deliver the talk The Latino on Facebook on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. and from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event is open to the entire Manhattan College community. Since launching in May 2009, Being Latino has amassed more than 18,000 fans while providing resources and education to an untapped audience. It is designed as a communications platform to educate, entertain and connect all peoples across the global Latino spectrum. Rios is also the co-founder of Latino BIGS, a division of Big Brothers, Big Sisters that serves the unique needs of urban Latino youths in the Bronx. Employees who have dependent children between the ages of 19 and 23 and are currently covered under CIGNA Health Plan are required to verify their dependents’ full-time student status by completing a CIGNA Questionnaire for Verification of Full-Time Student or Handicapped Adult Dependent Eligibility Form. Dependents that are 23 years old will be covered under your health plan until Dec. 31, 2009.  Effective Jan. 1, 2010, your son and/or daughter will be offered COBRA. Staff Convocation Honors
Dedicated Employees

At the annual staff convocation, which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers, members of the College community will be recognized for their 25 years of service. Debra Damico (international student services) and Aristea Frantzolakis (housekeeping) will be honored. Damico will also receive the Distinguished Lasallian Administrative Award, while the Distinguished Lasallian Staff Award will be given to Patricia Crimmins (vice president of finance’s office). A complete list of employees who will be recognized for their milestone years of service in 2009 can be found Here. Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Patricia Sheridan, assistant professor of business law, authored the article “The Effect of Tax Apportionment Clauses on Nontestamentary Assets,” which was published in the summer 2009 issue of the Westchester County Bar Journal. It was also selected for inclusion in the Journals and Law Reviews database on WESTLAW, which includes significant articles, comments, notes and similar materials from legal periodicals.

Dr. Anirban De, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, received a research grant titled Understanding the Role of Flexible and Rigid Barriers in Mitigating Surface Blast Effects on Underground Structures. For this project, he will serve as principal investigator from the National Science Foundation. The total award of $158,789 over three years is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Dr. Jeffrey Cherubini, assistant professor of physical education and human performance, published the article “Positive Psychology and Quality Physical Education” in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Tonight's Basketball Season Preview

The alumni relations office invites you to come and greet Manhattan College’s men’s and women’s coaches and hear about the upcoming 2009-10 season tonight, Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library. Annual Career Fair Slated for Oct. 21

Representatives from more than 100 companies will converge on campus on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 12:00-5:00 p.m. in Draddy Gymnasium to speak with interested students and alumni about job opportunities, internships and co-op positions. The career fair serves as a chance to meet with potential employers, as well as a terrific networking opportunity to reconnect with other Manhattan College alumni, many of whom act as company representatives. Coordination of the event and our enthusiastic alumni volunteers is led by Ken Kelly '54. for Prospective Students

The 2009 open house is part of a weeklong celebration marking the installation of  Brennan O'Donnell, Ph.D., as Manhattan College’s 19th president. Alumni are welcome to bring college-bound high school and transfer students to a complimentary brunch hosted by our alumni society on Sunday, Oct. 25. Mass will precede the event at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers and brunch will be in Dante’s Den (Thomas Hall) at 11:00 a.m. Advance reservations are required. The 2009 Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14. Lake Placid Ski and Snow Trip

Thomas Romano ’11 Sets New Manhattan College Golf Record

Breaking a 37-year-old school record for the lowest competitive round, Thomas Romano ’11 posted a six-under par 66 to lead the Jaspers golf team to a dual-match win over Yeshiva University on Sept. 23. Manhattan posted a team score of 292, which also established a new dual-match school record. On the par 72, 6,229-yard Glenwood Country Club course in Old Bridge, N.J., Romano shot a front-nine 31 en route to breaking the mark set by George Fisher in 1972 at the Leewood Country Club in Eastchester, N.Y. Hoops Teams Unveil
2009-10 Schedules

The Manhattan College men’s and women’s basketball teams recently unveiled complete schedules for the upcoming 2009-10 season. The men’s squad begins its campaign against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:00 p.m. in Draddy Gymnasium. Read. November home games include battles with William & Mary, Florida Atlantic and Fordham. The Lady Jaspers begin their first campaign under new coach John Olenowski on Friday, Nov. 13 against St. Francis (NY). Read.

 

Manhattan Athletic Department Expands Multimedia Platforms
for 2009-10

The Manhattan College athletic department has announced the expansion of its multimedia platforms for the 2009-10 academic year. The department has expanded its JasperVision live video broadcast package at GoJaspers.com. In addition, Jasper fans can now follow all the happenings of Manhattan’s 19 Division I teams via Twitter and Facebook. The comprehensive JasperVision broadcast schedule will begin this fall with more than 25 live events, as well as all men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball contests. Additionally, athletic events also will be streamed this spring at Gaelic Park. Read.
