College Will Honor Xerox Corporation Chairman at De La Salle Dinner

Manhattan College will present Anne M. Mulcahy, chairman of Xerox Corporation, with the De La Salle Medal at the College’s annual fundraising dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010. The ceremony will be held at The Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. Mulcahy spent eight years as chief executive officer of Xerox before retiring from the post, effective July 1, 2009, and retaining the position of chairman. Prior to serving as CEO, she was president and chief operating officer of Xerox from May 2000-July 2001, and also served as president of Xerox’s General Markets Operations, which created and sold products for reseller, dealer and retail channels. Staff Convocation Honors Three Dedicated Employees

Dr. Brennan O’Donnell hosted the first staff convocation of his presidency on Wednesday, Nov. 4. During the ceremony, four dedicated employees were recognized for their service to Manhattan College. Debra Damico (international student services) and Aristea Frantzolakis (housekeeping) were honored for 25 years at Manhattan. Damico also received the Distinguished Lasallian Administrative Award, while the Distinguished Lasallian Staff Award was given to Patricia Crimmins (vice president of finance’s office). In Memoriam

Brother Kevin Hargadon, retired associate professor of psychology, passed away on Nov. 19. Born in New York City, Hargadon was raised in the Bronx by Irish immigrants.  A licensed clinical psychologist in three states and the District of Columbia, he joined the psychology department at Manhattan in 1981. Before arriving at the College, Hargadon was assigned to La Salle Academy in Providence, R.I. (1952-57), Hillside Hall in Troy, N.Y. (1957-59), and to De La Salle College at The Catholic University of America (1959-70). He also spent one year at Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas in Madrid, Spain, and one year at La Salle University in Brazil. While in Washington, he spent six years as a staff psychologist at Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (1970-76) and founded and directed the De La Salle Center (1976-79), a clinic for college students who were in need of extended care. He was also in private clinical practice (1976-79) and served as a lecturer at Washington Theological Union (1977-79). Model UN Team Victorious
in Washington, D.C.

The Manhattan College Model UN team traveled to Washington, D.C., on Oct. 29 to participate in the National Model United Nations – D.C. conference. Sixteen Manhattan College students represented Uganda and Venezuela on six committees: General Assembly First Committee (disarmament), General Assembly Third Committee (social and humanitarian), Security Council, United Nations Environment Programme, African Union, and the Special Session on Children and Armed Conflict. The Uganda Delegation won one of three Outstanding Delegation awards (the highest one awarded). In addition, Chris Tucci ’11 and Brian Donovan ’10 won the outstanding position paper award in the Special Session on Children and Armed Conflict. For a full list of participants, click Here.

 

O’Malley Library Hosts
Holocaust Painting Exhibition

A selection of paintings by the artist Marilyn Honigman is currently on display in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library. Remembrance: A Daughter’s Reflections, co-sponsored by the Manhattan College archives and the Holocaust Resource Center, will run until Dec. 18. Inspired by photos that an American soldier gave to her father after he was liberated from Dachau, the paintings are a visual representation of the Holocaust that has evolved slowly. There are no accusations or condemnation, just contemplation of the psychological space in which we find ourselves. Read.

Manhattan College Philosophy Professor Authors New Book on Parenting

Dr. Seamus Carey, professor and chair of the philosophy department, is the author of the new book Growing Up with Your Children: 7 Turning Points in the Lives of Parents. Carey is also the author of The Faithful Parent: Discovering the Spirit of Purposeful Parenting (2007) and The Whole Child: Restoring Wonder to the Art of Parenting (2003).

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Pamela Chasek, assistant professor of government and director of the international studies program, was honored with a Washington Semester Program Special Recognition Award at American University on Nov. 6. In the citation, Chasek was acknowledged as a renowned scholar of international environmental policy, multilateral diplomacy, and international organizations. It was Chasek’s initiative that led to Manhattan College becoming affiliated with the Washington Semester Program in spring 2002.

Dr. Zella Moore, assistant professor of psychology, presented 15 separate peer-reviewed presentations at the annual national convention of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies in November. They examined a variety of clinical constructs, including clinical anger and its behavioral manifestations; emotion regulation and eating pathology; attachment styles and negative affect; educational issues in clinical psychology; the psychological treatment of court mandated violent offenders; and mindfulness processes. Seven current and former Manhattan College psychology majors were co-authors of six of the 15 presentations.

Dr. Robert Geraci, assistant professor of religious studies, recently presented two papers: “Between Evangelism and Education: Transhumanist Religion in Pop Science and Science Fiction” at the annual meeting for the American Academy of Religion in Montreal, Canada, on Nov. 8; and “Evolution and the Politics of Religious Practice” at the College of Mount Saint Vincent panel celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species on Nov. 19.

If you are interested in attending the pregame reception as well, the cost is only an additional $10 per individual or $20 per family and includes buffet, wine, domestic beer and soda. Yearbook Release for Class of 2009

Members of the class of 2009 are invited to attend their first alumni event celebrating the release of the 2009 Manhattanite yearbook on Jan. 22 from 7:00-9:00 in Dante’s Den, Thomas Hall. The reception of drinks and hors d’oeuvres is free, but registration must be completed online Here. Yearbooks will be mailed by the student activities office to individuals who are unable to attend. Jaspers 2010 Baseball Schedule Set

Coach Kevin Leighton announced Manhattan College’s baseball schedule for the 2010 campaign on Nov. 20. The slate features contests with powers from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big East, Conference USA and Colonial Athletic Association, in addition to the challenging MAAC lineup. The Jaspers open the season on Feb. 26-28 at the University of Miami, a 2009 NCAA Tournament participant. It will be the first meeting between the programs since the 2006 NCAA Regional Finals. Manhattan will then travel to Delaware (March 5-7), before returning to the Bronx for its annual meeting at cross-town rival Fordham. Read.

 

Women’s Soccer Stars Beauchamp
and McMahon Named All-Conference

Lacrosse

Jill Beauchamp ’10 and Courtney McMahon ’10 were named to the 2009 women’s soccer All-MAAC First Team on Oct. 31. Beauchamp, a co-captain, received All-MAAC honors for the third straight season. She started all 20 games in the back for the Lady Jaspers and anchored a defensive unit which posted six shutouts, the second most in the conference. McMahon completed her final season in Riverdale with nine points, including two goals and five assists. She was second on the team in scoring and led the team in assists for the second time in her four years at Manhattan. Read.

 

Manhattan Athletic Department Expands Multimedia Platforms

The Manhattan College athletic department has announced the expansion of its multimedia platforms for the 2009-10 academic year. The department has expanded its JasperVision live video broadcast package at GoJaspers.com. In addition, Jasper fans can now follow all the happenings of Manhattan’s 19 Division I teams via Twitter and Facebook. The comprehensive JasperVision broadcast schedule will begin this fall with more than 25 live events, as well as all men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball contests. Additionally, athletic events will be streamed this spring at Gaelic Park. Read.
