NEWS

Manhattan College's Jaspers for Haiti program is providing members of our community with a means to respond collectively to the suffering of our neighbors in Haiti. Coordinated through the office of mission and drawing on the resources of many individuals and offices, Jaspers for Haiti will organize events and activities in the coming weeks and months, including opportunities for prayer, educational forums and fundraising efforts.

On Wednesday, Feb. 10, there will be a Teach-In at 3:45 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the O'Malley Library. Faculty members and students of Haitian descent will speak about the devastation in Haiti and will help the audience better understand Haitian culture, religion, political system and history. A candlelit prayer vigil will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. All are welcome.

Donations will be accepted through the Jaspers for Haiti link on the College homepage, as well as at events held around campus, including a dance, basketball games, Sunday Mass, etc. Funds will be sent to Catholic Relief Services, the official overseas relief and development agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and to projects of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in Haiti. Check out the Jaspers for Haiti Web site for developments in our response. And please join us in our efforts and prayers to support Haiti in its grief and on its long road to recovery.

ON CAMPUS

Teach-In Examines Wars
in Iraq and Afghanistan

A teach-in on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Various sessions based on the class schedule will take place throughout the day in Smith Auditorium from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. A teach-in is an opportunity for lengthier discussion and consideration of an important, generally controversial, topic that deserves more attention than just one class period. Most of the sessions will be presentations and panels by Manhattan faculty and students. The topics will range from economic considerations at home and abroad, to religious and ethical dimensions and the responsibilities of journalists covering the wars. Air Force ROTC instructors have been invited to present as well. The entire Manhattan College community is welcome to attend, professors are encouraged to bring classes, and students are welcome during their free periods. The Teach-In is co-sponsored by campus ministry and social action, the peace studies program, the government and history departments, and the student organizations JustPeace and the government and politics club. For more information, contact Lois Harr at (718) 862-7142 or e-mail lois.harr@manhattan.edu.

Campus Ministry and Social Action Awarded Catholic Relief Services Grant

The office of campus ministry and social action (CMSA), in cooperation with the student organization JustPeace, has been awarded a grant from Catholic Relief Services (CRS). From its Fair Trade Fund, CRS awards “In the Marketplace Grants” to fund efforts to grow the Fair Trade market in the United States. According to CRS, such grants should promote broad-based sustainable growth of the marketplace, as opposed to benefiting one particular company or group. Special emphasis is placed on work with youth, young adults and diverse communities. CMSA’s winning application calls for a three-pronged effort including enhancing the existing effort to promote awareness and increase demand for fair trade products within the campus community; continue work with Sodexo Dining Services on the introduction of additional fair trade products; and a faculty development component aimed at introducing fair trade and economic justice concepts and information into the curriculum. To learn more about the CMSA project, contact Lois Harr at (718) 862-7142 or e-mail lois.harr@manhattan.edu. For more information about Fair Trade, click Here.
