Brother Louis DeThomasis, F.S.C., was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and delivered the keynote address at the College’s 168th Commencement Exercises held on May 23. Br. Louis is the president of Christian Brothers Investment Services-European Union (CBIS-EU). He also serves as chancellor of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota and senior fellow of the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership. In his address, Br. Louis said, “Graduates of the Manhattan College Class of 2010 share your magnificent education that this institution shared with you. You are the instruments to make dreams come true. You are the force to help people live with dignity. You are the dynamic that can create a caring and just society. You are the hope that will bring faith and finance together. You are graced with the education that you received here to create goodness and justice. Have faith in yourself to know that you are graced by the quality and mission of this College to make a difference.”

At the ceremony, Noddings encouraged the graduates in these challenging economic times. “Especially at this time, we might take a pledge to live a life of economic moderation.” She said, “If we must have excesses, let them be in love, learning, and giving. If you make that pledge, you need not be embarrassed by your salary as a pre-school teacher, repair man, delivery driver, or nurse’s aide, or even by temporary unemployment. Are you doing something for the common good? Something to which you are devoted? Something that makes you happy? If so, when you return in a few years for a class reunion, you can say honestly to your fellow alums, I’m doing great!” Noddings was awarded an honorary Doctor of Pedagogy at the College’s Spring Commencement on May 26. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to those in the adult degree completion program, along with master’s degrees awarded to those in the schools of education and engineering.

In Memoriam

John D. Nagle, Ph.D., associate professor emeritus
of English, died on May 10, 2010. He was 75 years old. A 1956 alumnus of the College, Nagle earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Fordham University. He served at the College from 1958 to 1994, beginning as an instructor and retiring with the rank of associate professor of English and World Literature. In a short story about the College in the Village Voice in 1984, a student was quoted as saying, “John Nagle is ‘the only professor in the city with students clamoring to study Milton at 8 a.m.’”

While pursing his doctorate, Nagle was awarded a grant from the prestigious Danforth Teacher Grant Program in 1967-1968. He was one of 38 faculty members selected from a national field of nearly 400. Nagle was awarded the Bonus et Fidelis medal in 1983. The citation stated, “His brilliant lectures, the extraordinary breadth of his knowledge of English and World Literature, his sense of humor and his sincere interest in all his students have earned him the admiration of his faculty colleagues.”

A resident of Riverdale, he is survived by his brother Msgr. Joseph P. Nagle; his sisters Virginia Danaher and Patricia McCormick; and many nieces and nephews; and grand nieces and nephews.

ON CAMPUS

New Major in Art History

Beginning in the fall semester of 2010, the College’s school of arts will be offering a major in art history. The new major, the first for the College’s fine arts department, will examine art and architecture created from the ancient to the contemporary worlds within broad historical and cultural contexts.

Art history majors will be required to take courses in both the earlier (Medieval and Renaissance) and later (Baroque and Modern) periods, as well as courses in World Arts and art history methodologies. Electives ranging from ancient to American art can also be structured to emphasize museum studies and to take advantage of the numerous opportunities for internships in the New York area. Majors will study the world-class architecture, galleries, libraries and museums in New York City. The newly introduced course in Monasticism and the Arts, for example, will draw heavily on the collections of the Cloisters, just as the course in the New York City Skyscraper focuses on buildings in midtown and downtown Manhattan.

Dr. Mark A. Pottinger, chair of the fine arts department, is enthusiastic about the new program. “The art history major at Manhattan College addresses the creative energy that is found among students who want to live and study in New York City, known throughout the world as a major center for art and culture.” He says, “As an art history major, you will not only study the artists and museums that define art in New York and throughout the world but you will also come to articulate how visual culture in general informs and challenges our own hopes and immediate desires.”

The College is expanding its full-time fine arts faculty to meet the new demands on the department. Dr. Po Yin Auyeung, who holds her doctorate from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, specializes in modern art history and Asian art. Dr. Daniel Savoy, a renaissance specialist who recently completed his doctorate at the Institute for Fine Arts, New York University, will join the department in the fall.  Dr. Richard Emmerson, dean of the school of arts, is also a specialist in medieval art history and will be teaching in the department.

Emmerson points to Manhattan College’s long legacy of liberal arts education.“ The addition of an Art History major to a College with such a rich heritage of liberal arts education was an easy and logical decision.” He says, “Manhattan will draw on both its own faculty and the knowledge and creativity of New York City to provide a top notch curriculum.” The fine arts department also offers minors in art history, digital media art, and music, along with courses required of all students to fulfill the College’s core requirements.

College Hosts 28th Annual
Engineering Awareness Program

Manhattan College’s Engineering Awareness Program, which aims to introduce high school students to potential careers in the various fields of engineering, will be held for the 29th straight year in July. The program is designed for minority and female high school students in science, engineering and SAT preparation at no cost to the students and is co-sponsored by the Metropolitan Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the ACE Mentorship Program of New York, as well as individual corporate sponsors. It is meant to introduce students to a wide range of engineering-related career options, with some emphasis on civil engineering.

Jaspers Helping Jaspers

Since its inception in February 2009, the Alumni Society’s ”Jaspers Helping Jaspers” initiative has posted over 2,650 open positions on the college’s Web site: Here. Alumni have contributed most of these job postings but we need more. We have identified mostly large companies where there are many alumni  employed. We will be contacting these alumni asking them to join our efforts to help unemployed Jaspers connect with open positions at their firms. In this economic environment, the personal touch of Jaspers helping Jaspers is needed to help alumni who are unemployed and looking for work.  This is a call to all of our alumni who are business owners and those in management positions at other firms; please lend an assist to your fellow Jaspers. We need more interaction between alumni and this program. If you have open positions, please send the information to bernadette.blocker@manhattan.edu. If you are looking for a job, send your resume to Bernadette Blocker at the same email address.  If you would like to help our committee, contact marjorie.apel@manhattan.edu.

John Soldinger Named MAAC
Rookie of the Week

John Soldinger, baseball, has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week. Soldinger tossed his second complete game of the season in a 7-1 victory over Iona to earn the honor.
Soldinger retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, as he gave up just one run and four hits to pick up his fourth straight win.  He struck out five and walked only one, lowering his team-leading ERA to 1.72.  Soldinger leads Manhattan with seven saves to go along with five victories. This marks the third time this season that Soldinger has been honored by the MAAC.  He previously earned Rookie of the Week honors on March 22, and he was named MAAC Pitcher of the week on March 2.

Manhattan's honorees were: Anthony DeMartino, Anthony Dinelli, Robert Kehoe, Nick LaBanca, Tom Romano, Robert Thompson, Michael Villarosa and Jonathan Wilson.

Jaci Rahey Selected First Team
All-Northeast Region

Junior Jaci Rahey, softball, has been selected First Team All-Northeast Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).  Rahey was selected as the utility player (non-pitcher) by NFCA member coaches in the region, and she is now eligible to be chosen to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America teams. Rahey led Manhattan to a 25-23-1 record and its second straight appearance in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament this season.  She was named First Team All-MAAC after leading the Lady Jaspers in batting average (.409), home runs (10), RBIs (58), hits (56), doubles (12), total bases (98), walks (25), slugging percentage (.715) and on-base percentage (.494).  Rahey also hit a remarkable .512 in MAAC games.  Her RBI total led the MAAC and was the second-highest single-season RBI mark in program history.  She also became just the second player in program history to record double-digit home runs in a single season. A total of 256 players from 116 different schools comprise this season's 10 all-region first and second teams, and Rahey was the only MAAC player selected.  Each all-region player, as well as all conference players and pitchers of the year not already selected, is eligible for All-America consideration.  The three NFCA Division I All-American squads will be announced on June 2.
