NEWS Manhattan Launching Learning and Living Community for Class of 2015 Starting in fall 2011, Manhattan College will launch the College’s first learning and living program, The Arches, to assist approximately 100 first-year students in their academic and social transition to college life.

Local Council Honoring Jeff Horn The Riverdale Jewish Community Relations Council is honoring Jeff Horn, Ph.D., professor and chair of the history department and director of the Holocaust Resource Center at Manhattan College, on April 3 at the 27th Annual Legislative Awards and Breakfast with the Martin Rollins Interfaith Brotherhood Award. Manhattan Students Volunteer in New Orleans During Winter Break From Jan. 16 - 23, a group of 13 volunteers from Manhattan College’s Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience (L. O. V. E.) traveled to New Orleans and worked with Operation Helping Hands to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. To read more, click here.

Senior Will Present Paper at the American Academy of Religion Conference Douglas Mandelkow, a senior and a double religious studies and history major, will present his paper “Religious Affiliation within the World of Online Gaming” at the Mid-Atlantic Conference for the American Academy of Religion on March 18. The presentation is based upon research conducted for Mandelkow’s honors thesis in religious studies.

Manhattan’s Air Force ROTC The Air Force ROTC is actively recruiting full-time students interested in joining the program and becoming an Air Force officer after graduation. Participating officers in training can receive scholarships and $350-$500 monthly toward spending money and $900 per year for books.

John Wilcox to Speak at James Luther Adams Forum on March 31 The 15th annual James Luther Adams Forum on Religion and Society will occur on Thursday, March 31 at 4:00 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room in Leo Hall. John Wilcox, Ph.D., director for the center of Lasallian studies at Manhattan and professor emeritus of religious studies, will speak on the topic, Together and by Association: The Legacy of James Luther Adams and the Future of Religious Colleges and Universities.
Manhattan to Host Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference on April 2 On Saturday, April 2, the sixth annual Spuyten Duyvil undergraduate mathematics conference, funded by a grant from the MAA-NSF, will take place on the College’s campus. The full-day conference runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and features presentations by undergraduate students and faculty in mathematics and related disciplines.

Manhattan Celebrates Black History Month With Spotlight on Entertainment Last month, the Diversity Committee at Manhattan organized an afternoon of entertainment, music and trivia for the local community in honor of Black History Month. The featured list of entertainers included: Frank Owens, pianist and historian; Harold Cromer, actor, dancer and historian; Fred Stanton, saxophonist; Mabel Lee, singer and dancer; Cobi Narita, jazz promoter; and a few other surprise guests.
FACULTY/STAFF Faculty and Staff Accomplishments Richard K. Emmerson, Ph.D., dean of the school of arts, was recently elected as a fellow of the Medieval Academy of America.
