What is HEOP?

Financial Assistance

The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is an academic support program established by the state of NEW YORK in 1970. It enables motivated students who lack adequate preparation and financial resources for college attendance to pursue a college degree. To meet the specific need of its students, HEOP primarily provides testing, counseling, tutoring. academic advisement and financial assistance.

To assist the student in arranging finances for educational purposes, financial aid is provided through a combination of the following: New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Pell Grant, Manhattan College HEOP Grant, HEOP stipends, Subsidized Stafford Loans, and Federal Work Study Employment.

The following program services are available to all HEOP students in good academic standing.

 

Advisement

To ensure the success of one’s college education, HEOP provides a variety of support services that include academic, personal. and career counseling. Individual counseling is provided on a regularly scheduled basis throughout your college years.

In order to transfer into HEOP at Manhattan College, a student must previously have been enrolled in a comparable opportunity program such as HEOP, EOP,SEEK, or College Discovery. Transfer students must complete and submit the following forms:

1) Manhattan College Admision Application
2) HEOP Transfer Application
3) All College Transcripts
4) Copies of all Financial Aid Award Nolices
5) Copy of family’s Income Tax Forms or related income documentation

 

Academic Preparation

During the summer prior to the freshman year, HEOP requires students to offend an intensive summer program from July to mid-August. Instruction focuses on the improvement of English, Math, and Critical Thinking Skills. Other subjects in the areas of Humanities and Social Science are offered. Students that successfully complete the summer program can earn a total of 6 credits towards their degree.

What distinguishes Manhattan Colleges HEOP from similar Programs?

Acceptance into Manhattan College’s HEOP assures a student the pursuit of the major of his/her choice in any of the five undergraduate schools: Arts, Business, Engineering Science, and Education & Human Services.

Manhattan College is large enough to offer many programs found only at universities, but small enough to afford each student personal attention from faculty and administrators.

HEOP's professional staff offers one-to-one counseling just for HEOP students. Their time is yours!


Application Process

Eligibility Requirements

A Manhattan College Admission Application should be marked HEOP in the upper right-hand corner and mailed to: Manhattan College, Admissions Office, Riverdale, NY 10471. Placement in the HEOP is limited and, therefore, applicants are encouraged to submit information by January 15. First time college freshmen are accepted into HEOP for the fall term only and are required to attend the summer program prior to freshmen year.

Official copies of SAT scores and Secondary School Report (HS-transcript) must be forwarded to the Admissions Office.

All students must apply for Pell and TAP by competing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A copy of this application should be available at the time of your HEOP interview.

Students being considered for the HEOP will be contacted by the Admissions Office and instructed to arrange for an interview with the HEOP office. All HEOP candidates will be interviewed by the HEOP staff.

To verify eligibility, applicants are required to submit to the HEOP office: 1) a copy of the family’s income fax forms from the prior year of application and/or 2) an official letter stating the exact amount of benefits paid during the previous year for each member of the household from Human Resources Administration, Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, etc.

To qualify for HEOP, applicants must meet the criteria established by the New York State Education Department, as follows:

State Residency - Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the US who has resided in New York State for a minimum of one year.

These amounts may be raised by $4,800 if the household is supported by 2 workers or by 1 worker who is the sole support of a one-parent family. Add $1800 for a household supported solely by one member working 2 or more jobs concurrently.

School Preparation - Applicant must be a High School graduate or holder of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or their equivalents. An Armed Forces Equivalency Diploma with a maximum score of 40 on each test section and a minimum composite score of 225 is acceptable.
Financial Eligibility - Applicants must prove a history of deprived economic background as defined by the State. For students first entering college between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008 the following guidelines apply:

Students may also be found economically eligible if any of the below apply:

1) The student’s family receives public assistance.
2) The student is living with foster parents who do not provide support for college, and no monies are provided by the natural parents.
3) The student is a ward of the State or County.

Other exception may apply. Please contact the HEOP office directly with any questions regarding economic eligibility.
