Manhattan College, mindful of its
distinctive Lasallian
heritage, has always placed great emphasis on excellence in teaching. In a
visible commitment to the pursuit of such excellence, the College, in 1985,
established the Center for Teaching and Learning under the direction of Brother
Christopher Dardis, a long-time member of the School of Education and Human
Services.
Since then, the Center has
worked to strengthen the College’s commitment to foster and reward excellent
teaching; specifically the Center seeks to maintain and enhance the quality of
instruction, and to promote among students characteristics of active,
value-oriented, life-long learning.
To accomplish these goals, the
Center provides a variety of services:
1. It encourages and facilitates
various occasions at which faculty gather (in small or large groups, formally or
informally) to discuss issues related to teaching and learning;
2. It
promotes reflection on educational principles and theories as well as
instructional practice through a monthly newsletter and periodic
workshops;
3. It consults individually with teachers about any aspect of
instruction and provides observation of classes, including videotaping (Such
consultations are entirely confidential.);
4. It provides access to a variety
of educational resources through its on-line website and at its campus
office.
