Peer Review

Cooper, Alan.  "Daily Writing for Peer Response."  College Composition and Communication 37 (1986): 346-48.  Note from "Staffroom Interchange."  Describes how daily twenty-minute writing assignments are used in a composition class, how the assignments become progressively more directed, and how the compositions are used to teach revision lessons.

Danis, M. Francine.  "Catching the Drift: Keeping Peer-Response Groups on Track."  College Composition and Communication 39 (1988): 356-58.  Note from "Staffroom Interchange."  Advocates the practice of "making observations" as a method of keeping peer review groups focused on the task at hand.  The practice promotes both spontaneity and safety in peer group procedures.

George, Diana.  "Working with Peer Groups in the Composition Classroom."  College Composition and Communication 35 (1984): 320-26.  Reports the author's classification of three types of peer review groups in the typical classroom, based on tapes of more than 100 group sessions.  George describes the characteristics of each type, lessons to be learned from each, and ways of preventing or remedying ineffective groups.

Grimm, Nancy.  "Improving Students' Responses to their Peers' Essays."    College Composition and Communication 37 (1986): 91-4.  Note from "Staffroom Interchange."  Presents the author's guidelines for small group workshops in outline form and comments briefly on each.  Grimm has found that critique sheets often produce mechanical, useless responses and that brief written instructions can become a helpful part of the modeling process that lets students know what is expected of them.

Haaga, David A. F.  "Peer Review of Term Papers in Graduate Psychology Courses."  Teaching of Psychology 20.1 (1993): 28-32.  Describes a process of blind peer review of graduate student term papers.  Haaga includes four valuable suggestions, as well as a table of instructions for student reviewers.  Although his procedure is most appropriate for graduate students, it could be adjusted for undergraduates and for types of papers other than the term paper.

Newkirk, Thomas.  "Direction and Misdirection in Peer Response."  College Composition and Communication 35 (1984): 301-11.  Reports on the author's study of differences in student and faculty responses to four sample essays.  In light of these findings, Newkirk raises questions about directions to "write for peers," about passive vs. active teacher involvement in workshop groups, and about brief correction symbols used by many writing teachers.

Petonito, Gina.  "Fostering Peer Learning in the College Classroom."  Teaching Sociology 19 (1991): 498-501.  Presents techniques the author has used successfully in her sociology classes to promote collaborative learning and total participation.

Strang, Steven.  "Product and Process: The Author-Led Workshop."  College Composition and Communication 35 (1984): 327-33.  Describes the writer's role, reader's role, and teacher's role in an author-led workshop.  Strang uses this technique in creative writing classes, but his cover sheets and writer's guides might also be adapted to other courses.
