It is always worth remembering that what most of us routinely call "grading papers" is more accurately called "responding to student writing," the purpose of which is to provide the kinds of comments that student writers will find useful in improving their writing. Thus, the section that follows offers suggestions for responding as clearly, constructively, and efficiently as possible, to give students what they need while also easing your workload.
