LLRN 204-03 Roots of the
Modern Age: Literature
Spring 1999

Essay # 1
First Draft Due: Thursday, February 25th
Revision Due: Thursday, March 4th
Write a three page essay that argues your interpretation of one of the following topics of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Your paper must be double spaced with one inch margins. Remember you must have a strong thesis statement in your introduction, and you must support it with evidence from the text. Be sure to avoid "orphan" citations, citations that do not support your main idea or any of its subtopics. Organization your paper thoughtfully; it is advisable to prepare an outline first.
1- Any one of the following through a description of the characters Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras:
- fathers and sons
- honor
- thought versus action
2- Hamlet's attitude of life and the world
3- Female characters (Gertrude and Ophelia)
4- The actions of characters and the chain of being
