INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYERS
What is a Mentor?
A mentor is a professional, usually a Manhattan College Alum, who
is interested in helping students gain career insight and greater
self-understanding. Mentors tend to be good listeners, guides, advisors, advocates, non-judgmental friends and facilitators.
Goal of the Mentoring Relationship
The ultimate goal of the mentoring relationship is to advance the educational and personal growth of the student
(mentee).
Benefits of being a Mentor
- Personal satisfaction and fulfillment in making a difference in an individual's development
- The opportunity to shape the future by shaping, in a concrete way, the next generation
- The chance to use his/her own knowledge and skills and to learn in a new way
- The opportunity to translate past occurrences into present learning and gain new insight into one's own life
- Meeting and interviewing a possible employee for your company early in their school career
What is the commitment?
- It goes without saying - time and energy. You will be meeting with your mentee to discuss what you plan to do and time commitments will be decided
between you and your mentee. It is suggested that you try to meet
as often as you can during the academic year.
- Attend a mentor training session
- Attend a “meet and greet" event in the fall and the Mentor
Dinner in February
- Complete, with your mentee, a mentor planning form
- Complete an evaluation form at the end of the semester
