Manhattan College to Commemorate the 10th Anniversary of 9/11
To mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Manhattan College is presenting a five-day We Remember series of events, Wednesday, Sept. 7 through Sunday, Sept. 11 to pay tribute to the victims of the tragic attacks. The events include: a memorial ceremony, a panel presentation by graduates of the College, a faculty teach-in, a campus-wide service day on Sept. 10 in honor of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, an act signed by President Obama in 2009 officially designating Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and a memorial Mass. The College will also introduce an exhibition at the Mary Alice and Tom O’Malley Library during the week to commemorate the fallen Manhattan College alumni.
“On Sept. 11, 2001, the College lost 20 graduates and scores of relatives and friends of our extended community; in honor of them, their families and all of the other victims, the College is hosting the We Remember series,” said Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College.

College Integrates Enhanced Athletic Logos
As part of Manhattan College’s new marketing and promotional campaign entitled The Promise, the College is introducing its newly enhanced primary athletic logos this month. The traditional Block M logo was revamped, but still retains a vintage look, which has been a mainstay throughout the athletic program’s rich history. Additionally, both a ‘Manhattan’ and a ‘Jaspers’ word mark were created to complement the Block M logo.
The new athletic logos will be used to carry the College’s brand in a variety of ways, most notably, through official apparel (team uniforms, warm-ups and coaches gear) worn by more than 300-student athletes who represent Manhattan’s 19 Division I athletic teams in competition across the nation. In addition, a large selection of fan apparel created with marks from the new logo library will become available. Manhattan College’s new athletic logos will also be visible in promotional efforts over a range of multimedia platforms (local and national television, Internet, mobile and social media).
Like the new College logo, the ‘Jaspers’ word mark displays the Lasallian Star of Faith (“Signum Fidei”) to symbolize the five core principles (faith in the presence of God, respect for all people, commitment to quality education, an inclusive community, and concern for the poor and social justice) that guided the Christian Brothers in founding Manhattan College.
A graphic standards guide is also being developed as the primary quality control tool and will standardize, format and communicate acceptable usage for the new athletic brand identity. This will ensure a consistent brand presentation for the College’s athletic programs.
College Launches Master’s Option in Cosmetic Engineering
Manhattan College’s leading chemical engineering program, ranked fifth in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, is introducing a new option in cosmetic engineering with its Master of Science program this fall. With only a few colleges and universities offering cosmetic science programs, the College’s new option will be the first of its kind in the country.
“We took our nationally recognized chemical engineering curriculum and coupled it with cutting edge cosmetic engineering courses, so that our students could take advantage of a completely untapped market in the engineering field,” said Ann Marie Flynn, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of Manhattan’s chemical engineering department. “Nobody else is doing what we’re doing – and I’ll take that advantage any day.”
After consulting experts at L’Oréal, Revlon, Avon and Cosmetic Essence on the skills that recent bachelor’s hires lack to succeed in the cosmetics industry, Flynn started developing plans for the new option including hiring Thomas Twardowski, Ph.D., a visiting professor, to help design the curriculum.
Education Students Gain Teaching Experience in Africa
Eight Manhattan College education students recently returned from a two-week service trip to Windhoek, Namibia after teaching and helping to prepare future lesson plans for more than 120 children at an after school program. Accompanied by four faculty members, the students (six seniors and two juniors) applied skills they had received in their own education courses, and organized age-appropriate lessons and games to enhance the learning of children with limited resources and overcrowded classrooms.
“I think this experience increased our students’ confidence because their level of knowledge about what to do and how to approach things was tremendous, and everyone else was depending on them, asking for advice, watching them and seeing how well they were able to manage a classroom,” said Karen Nicholson, Ph.D., associate professor of education, and one of the faculty members who attended the trip. Along with Nicholson, William Merriman, Ph.D., dean and professor of the school of education, Peter McCarthy, Ph.D., assistant professor of special and elementary education, and Br. Augustine Nicoletti, FSC, Ed.D., associate professor of education and chair of the department, also attended the trip. MaryBeth Gallagher, co-director of the Centre and a New York native, was very impressed by the students’ professionalism, and grateful because the students prepared lesson plans for when they left to facilitate a smoother transition for the children.

College Hosts Summer Literacy Program for Local High School Students
From July 5 through July 8, 19 Bronx high school students participated in the third Summer Literacy Institute program on Manhattan College’s campus. Partnering with the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center College Directions Program with funding provided by the Teagle Foundation, the Institute offers students the opportunity to come to campus to live in the dorms, take three courses in philosophy, religious studies and biology with College professors, spend approximately 20 hours in a writing group to complete a polished college application personal statement, and learn more about the College admissions and financial aid processes, and the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP).
“The entire program, from essay writing, to classes, to hanging out in the dorms, motivates the students to work hard their senior year to attend the college of their choice,” said Jose Chavarry ’12, a student mentor and history major. “For us, the student mentors and writing coaches, it is an invaluable opportunity to see these students develop their ideas, and to share their enthusiasm.”
In addition to working with a writing coach and student mentor in the writing group, students attended a writing workshop led by Paul Hendrickson, National Book Award winner (for his book Sons of Mississippi) and former Washington Post reporter. Dr. John Rodriquez, a Bronx poet, also provided a poetry reading and discussion for the students.
“The Summer Literacy Institute is a concentrated college-immersion experience with the ultimate goal of getting students to realize they are capable of completing the work needed to succeed in college,” said Daniel Collins, Ph.D., director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) and associate professor of English. “If we can do that, they will finish their senior year of high school more likely to go to college and be better prepared for college, and in some cases, be the first person in their family to attend college.”
The Donald Broderick Scholarship Opens Doors for Students
As a student at Archbishop Stepinac High School, Stephen Forlini ’12 had already ruled out going to Manhattan College because he felt the cost of attendance was out of reach. Until he met Fran Broderick, a former Mount St. Vincent professor of communications and, along with husband Ray, the benefactor of the Donald R. Broderick ’86 scholarship. Forlini was selected to receive the scholarship, which facilitated him going to Manhattan College.
The memorial scholarship honors Donald Broderick’s memory after being killed tragically in an accident a few months after his graduation from Manhattan College. The scholarship is designed to help top students from Archbishop Stepinac fund their education at Manhattan College because Donald was an alumnus of both schools.
“I think it’s amazing what they do in honor of their son,” said Forlini, admitting the scholarship “is what made me decide to go to Manhattan.” He is particularly impressed with the interest the Brodericks have shown in him. “I’m an Eagle Scout, and they came to my Eagle Scout ceremony. Mrs. Broderick was really enthusiastic about it,” he said, adding, “They are really nice people.”
Now a senior majoring in finance, Forlini is planning to continue on at Manhattan College after graduation to earn the College’s new accelerated M.B.A. degree.
Like Forlini, Tom DiCarlucci ’13, a business major, focusing on computer information systems, received the Donald Broderick scholarship as a senior at Archbishop Stepinac. DiCarlucci always wanted to come to Manhattan, as many friends were planning to attend, and he was interested in the programs, but was concerned with the cost. He decided to commute, to help make his first choice more affordable. But being awarded the scholarship helped him – and his family – “extremely,” said DiCarlucci, adding that it means a great deal to him to have the help.
Anthony Gallo ’14, a civil engineering major, is also a recipient of the Donald Broderick scholarship, and is grateful to the Brodericks for their support.
“Receiving the scholarship is helping me to achieve my goals,” said Gallo. “It has opened so many doors for me, and I can’t say thank you enough to the Brodericks.
Engineering Student Published in Clear Waters
Robert Wasp ’11, a civil engineering major, presented the results of a student project on New York City’s water supply at the New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA) conference in February, and as a result, an article was published in the organization’s magazine, Clear Waters. Scott Lowe, Ph.D., P.E., professor of civil and environmental engineering, was the advisor on Wasp’s project.

Staff and Faculty Attend Formation Programs During the Summer
Nearly 20 Manhattan College faculty and staff attended a one to two week Lasallian formation program earlier this summer as a way to reflect and learn more extensively about the Lasallian Catholic teachings. Jennifer Edwards, coordinator for campus ministry and social action; Bernadette Hicks, recruitment coordinator for career services; Robert Coleman, coordinator for media technology; and Patrice Tiffany, D.Ed., associate professor for mathematics and computer science; Gabrielle Brown, associate director for admissions and financial aid, and Br. David Trichtinger, FSC, the new academic advisor for athletes starting Aug. 8, attended the Lasallian Leadership Institute (LLI). LLI is a three-year program, which integrates and promotes the Lasallian heritage in a one-week session during the summer and a weekend session in the fall and spring on the College’s campus.
Thomas McCarthy, assistant director for annual giving; and Maire Duchon, library director for the Mary Alice and Tom O’Malley Library; traveled to St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga, Calif., to attend the Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies. The program offers two week sessions for three consecutive summers and provides a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Lasallian presence through in-depth study of John Baptist de La Salle’s personal journey and the Lasallian spirituality and pedagogy
Judith Slisz, director of assessment; Br. Augustine Nicoletti, FSC, associate professor of education; Angie Thrapsimis, offices of the dean of students & residence life; Richard FitzPatrick, Ph.D., professor of management; and Lois Harr, director for campus ministry and social action; also spent one week in Memphis, Tenn., at the Lasallian Social Justice Institute (LSJI), and were immersed in the Catholic Church’s teachings on social justice and the Lasallian mission of serving the poor.
As part of the International Lasallian University Leadership program, Lisa Anne Vacca-Rizopoulos, Ph.D., associate professor of education; Lisa Juncaj, associate director of student financial services; Thom Gencarelli, Ph.D., associate professor of communication and chair of the communication department, and Br. Raymond Meagher, FSC, assistant professor of education, traveled to Rome for two weeks. The program is designed to assist universities in their ongoing programs of faculty formation and enrichment.

Mu Sigma Chapter Receives ACE Award
Mu Sigma, Manhattan’s local chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society of Education, received notification in July that the chapter is being honored with the Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) award for the fourth time. ACE is one of the highest honors that Kappa Delta Pi bestows upon its institutional chapters, and Mu Sigma is among 23 chapters to receive the award out of a total of 600 chapters. Representatives of Mu Sigma will receive the award at the 100th Anniversary Convocation of Kappa Delta Pi in Indianapolis, Ind., in November, and Br. Raymond Meagher, FSC, assistant professor of education, and Karen Nicholson, Ph.D., associate professor of education, are co-moderators of the Mu Sigma Chapter.
Student Honored with Scholarship
Vincent Cala, a senior and civil engineering major, was awarded the John F. Donohoe Scholarship by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of New Jersey in July.

Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival on Aug. 11
Manhattan College is offering its alumni the unique chance to experience Shakespeare at his finest at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival’s production of Hamlet on Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.
The $35 ticket includes admission to the performance and a picnic of wine, cheese and sandwiches on the beautiful grounds of Boscobel in Garrison, N.Y., overlooking the Hudson River and West Point. We encourage you to bring your own picnicking items as well, and the park opens at 5 p.m.

Monmouth Day at the Races on Aug. 13
On Aug. 13, join the College at the Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, N.J., for the 38th annual Running of the Manhattan College Purse hosted by the Jersey Shore Alumni Club. The cost is $35 per person, which includes admission to the clubhouse, private seating, official track program and a hot buffet lunch (cash bar) in the Rivalry Room in Parterre Level II (a/c overlooking the track).

The planning for this year’s career fair for undergraduate students has started. The career fair will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 19 in Draddy Gymnasium from 12 to 4 p.m. Alumni volunteers are needed to assist with calling prospective exhibitors, and to host the students and exhibitors on Oct. 19.

Become a Mentor at Manhattan
The Mentor Program provides opportunities for Manhattan College students to gain insight into their intended careers by being paired with professionals, generally Manhattan College alumni in those careers. Students grow educationally, personally and professionally as they learn about their responsibilities and employment options within their career path. The Mentor Program is always looking for new mentors in all fields to assist our students, particularly in computer engineering and software, business, communications, law enforcement (FBI) and psychology.

Jaspers Helping Jaspers
Since its inception in February 2009, the Alumni Society’s Jaspers Helping Jaspers initiative has posted more than 4,450 open positions on the College’s website. Alumni have contributed most of these job postings, but we need more.
The center for career development has identified mostly large companies where there are many alumni employed and will be reaching out to these alumni asking them to join our efforts to help unemployed Jaspers connect with open positions at their firms. In this economic environment, the personal touch of Jaspers Helping Jaspers is needed to help alumni who are unemployed and looking for work.
This is a call to all of our alumni who are business owners and those in management positions at other firms. Please lend a hand to assist your fellow Jaspers. We need more interaction between alumni and this program. Robert Geraci, Ph.D., associate professor of religious studies, was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to support his research entitled EAGER -- Virtually Meaningful: The Power and Presence of Meaning in Virtual Worlds.
Lois Harr, director for campus ministry and social action, presented at the DENA (District of Eastern North America) Brothers retreat on Aug. 2 at LaSalle University on association for mission. She facilitated a panel discussion with partners and Brothers who were part of the Rome International Lasallian Centre (or Centro Internazionale Lasalliano in Italian) trip last fall.
Michael Judge, Ph.D., associate professor of biology and acting chair of the department, recently published a paper with two colleagues (Mark L. Botton and Mary G. Hamilton) in Hydrobiologia, the International Journal of Aquatic Sciences. The paper is called Physiological Consequences of the Supralittoral Fringe: Microhabitat Temperature Profiles and Stress Protein Levels in the Tropical Periwinkle.
Claudia Setzer, Ph.D., professor of religious studies, and David Shefferman, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies, co-edited The Bible and American Culture: A Sourcebook, which was recently released by Routledge.
Patricia M. Sheridan, J.D., assistant professor of business law and pre-law advisor, will have an article, Broken Promises - Recovery of Emotional Distress Damages for Breach of Wedding-Related Contracts, published in the Fall 2011 issue of the North East Journal of Legal Studies.

Manhattan Signs 33 Newcomers for 2011-12 Season
Dan Mecca, head coach for Manhattan College’s track & field and cross country teams, recently announced the 2011-2012 recruiting class. A total of 33 newcomers (17 men, 16 women) will join the track & field squad next season, and 14 of those athletes (seven men, seven women) will also run cross country for the Jaspers.
Women's Swimmers Recognized for Success In Classroom
The Manhattan College women’s swimming team has been selected as a Scholar All-American Team by the College Swimming Coaches of America (CSCAA) for the Spring 2011 semester. This marks the 29th consecutive semester that the Lady Jaspers have earned CSCAA recognition, dating back to the spring of 1997.

Jaspers Draw Syracuse in 2011 NIT Season Tip-Off
The 2011 Dicks Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off 16-team field was revealed on July 20, and Manhattan College was paired with Syracuse in the opening round of the North Regional at the Carrier Dome. The Jaspers will then take on Albany or Brown in the ensuing round for either the regional’s championship or consolation contest. The first- and second-rounds will be held Nov. 14, 15 and 16 with specific game dates and times to be announced at a later date. ESPN will provide coverage throughout the event, either on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN3.com.
Several Student-Athletes Receive Academic Honors
A total of 85 Manhattan College student athletes were named to the 2010-2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academic Honor Roll on July 11.
Each of Manhattan’s 19 athletic teams had at least one student-athlete recognized for their success in the classroom, led by 12 selections from the men’s track & field squad. On the women’s side, the track & field and softball teams led the way with 10 honorees each.
Walter Olsewski Retires as Head Golf Coach
After 11 seasons at the helm, Walter Olsewski is retiring as head coach of the Manhattan College men’s golf program. He will continue to serve as Manhattan’s men’s and women’s swimming head coach, a position he has held since 1997.
A 1968 Manhattan graduate, Olsewski is entering his 15th season as head coach of the women's swimming program.
Mark Jones, Brendan Lawler Elevated to Full-Time Status
On July 7, the College announced the roles of Mark Jones, head volleyball coach and Brendan Lawler, head women’s soccer coach were expanded to the first full-time mentors in the history of each program. Jones is entering his third season at Manhattan, while the 2011 campaign will be Lawler’s second in Riverdale.
“As Manhattan embarks on a new strategic plan, an important plank is maximizing the value of competing in Division I athletics,” said Richard Satterlee, Ph.D., vice president for student life at Manhattan College. “There is probably no other area as important to the future success of our programs as quality coaching. As a result, we are thrilled to increase our support to two of our outstanding women's programs.”
Manhattan Unveils 2011 Men’s Golf Fall Schedule
The 2011 Manhattan College men’s golf fall schedule was unveiled on Aug. 1 by Jerry Wood ’75, the new head coach.
The schedule features several tournaments, as well as three dual matches. The Jaspers open the season at the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils Fall Invitational at the Wethersfield Country Club in Wethersfield, Conn., on Friday, Sept. 9 and conclude on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Ryan Named Head Coach of Guyana for World Championships
Joe Ryan, an assistant coach for the Manhattan College track & field team has been named head coach of the Guyanese National Team for the upcoming World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Ryan served in the same capacity at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
This marks the sixth straight World Championships that Ryan will attend as either a coach or team official for Guyana, a nation in northern South America.
