Manhattan University proudly announced that Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Mary Alice O’Malley were named Affiliated members of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the highest honor bestowed by the Brothers. A special Mass and reception took place on September 3 in the Brothers’ Residence on the University campus.
Manhattan University was founded in 1853 by the Christian Brothers, bearers of an educational tradition that began in 17th-century France with Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Patron Saint of Teachers. The honor of Affiliation recognizes those who have been associated with the fraternal character and the educational apostolate of the Brothers to the highest degree.
A 1963 graduate of Manhattan University (then Manhattan College), Mr. O’Malley twice served as the Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees. Together, the O’Malleys have been powerful donors to Manhattan, particularly to the School of Business which bears their names – The O’Malley School of Business.
Mr. O’Malley enjoyed a long and successful business career, beginning his business journey in 1964 with Phillip Brothers (Phibro), an international trading firm. Starting in the mailroom, he moved into roles of increasing responsibility over the course of a 22-year career there. When Phibro merged with Salomon Brothers, Mr. O’Malley became Vice-Chairman and head of the firm’s energy division. In 1986, he moved on to develop his own outside business interests. Over the following 30 years, his career included acting as Chairman and CEO of four public oil refining and retailing companies. He also served on the boards of various public companies, including Salomon Brothers, Phillips Petroleum, Lowe’s Corporation, and PetSmart. He currently is active in real estate development in both the U.S. and Germany and in the growth of a specialized pharmaceutical company.
The O’Malleys – who have been married for 60 years – firmly believe that those who have been fortunate to achieve much should, in turn, give much. Together, they have served on the boards of numerous hospitals, schools, and universities, making significant financial contributions to each.
Brother Daniel Gardner, Visiting Instructor of Religious Studies and Philosophy and a former President of Manhattan University, stated, “The O’Malleys epitomize the true embodiment of the Lasallian spirit on which Manhattan University was founded over 170 years ago: Faith in the presence of God, respect for all people, an appreciation of an inclusive community, concern for the poor and social justice, and a quality education. We are so fortunate to have them as part of the University family and each of them is so worthy of this honor."
Going forward, the O’Malleys will be Thomas O’Malley, AFSC and Mary Alice O’Malley, AFSC.
