Manhattan University Celebrates Distinguished Alumnus and Acclaimed Novelist Sebastian Castillo ’11

His rising visibility was underscored in a recent New York Times Magazine feature, “The Secret to Getting Through Big, Dense, Difficult Books,” which highlights his distinctive approach to reading, writing, and engaging with challenging literature. The article positions him within a broader cultural moment that values ambitious storytelling, affirming his place as a leading thinker and creator whose work resonates with readers navigating complex texts and ideas.

Castillo’s creative trajectory is deeply connected to Manhattan University, where he excelled as a student and scholar. During his time on campus, he was awarded the Branigan Research Fellowship, became the inaugural recipient of the Mark Taylor Memorial Scholarship, and won the McGoldrick Medal in English—honors that reflected his exceptional promise. After graduation, he returned to teach in the Department of English, mentoring emerging writers and contributing to the University’s vibrant intellectual community.

Today, Castillo is the author of Fresh, Green Life, The Zoo of Thinking, SALMON, Not I, and 49 Venezuelan Novels, a body of work that has positioned him at the forefront of contemporary experimental fiction. His debut novel recently reached new audiences with its Spanish-language translation, expanding his international readership. Castillo currently lives in Philadelphia, where he teaches at Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Moore College of Art and Design. He holds an MFA in Fiction from Temple University (’15), complementing the strong liberal-arts foundation he built at Manhattan.
