Manhattan Inaugurates
Dr. Brennan
O’Donnell
as 19th President

Inauguration

Manhattan College officially inaugurated Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., as president on Wednesday, Oct. 28 in Draddy Gymnasium. In front of more than 1,200 attendees, including university presidents, delegates, alumni and other special guests, O’Donnell was entrusted with the College’s charter and sponsorship covenant as the 19th leader in Manhattan history. He received a presidential medallion from Br. Dennis Malloy (pictured left) and Thomas O’Malley ’63 (pictured right), chairman of Manhattan College’s board of trustees and was presented with new presidential regalia by former Manhattan College president Br. Thomas Scanlan, F.S.C. The installation ceremony featured greetings by Raymond Kelly ’63, police commissioner of the City of New York, and The Most Rev. Gerald T. Walsh, rector and president of St. Joseph’s Seminary. The closing benediction was delivered by Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, archbishop emeritus of Washington, D.C. In Memoriam

Saltarelli

The Rev. Michael Saltarelli ’75, former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, Del., passed away on Oct. 8. He was 77. Saltarelli served as bishop of the diocese, which includes Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, until last year. Born in Jersey City, N.J., he studied at Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary and received a master’s degree in religious studies from Manhattan. Saltarelli presided over an era of expansion and growth in the Diocese of Wilmington. A three-year capital campaign Bringing the Vision to Life addressed the needs of a growing diocesan family of nearly 200,000 to build, renovate and expand churches, schools and other facilities. Holocaust Resource Center
Welcomes Trinity College Professor

Kassow

Dr. Samuel Kassow, the Charles Northam Professor at Trinity College, will deliver the second annual Frederick M. Schweitzer Lecture on the Holocaust at Manhattan College on Monday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event, presented by the Holocaust Resource Center, is free and open to the public. Kassow will deliver the lecture Between History and Catastrophe: Emanuel Ringelblum in the Warsaw Ghetto. He is the author of four books, including the award-winning Who Will Write Our History: Emanuel Ringelblum and the Oynet Shabes Archive (2007) and The Distinctive Life of East European Jewry (2004). A public intellectual whose efforts have contributed to the preservation of Jewish culture both in Europe and the United States, Kassow’s many scholarly articles have appeared in Polish, Russian and German, as well as in English. O’Malley Library Hosts
Holocaust Painting Exhibition

A selection of paintings by the artist Marilyn Honigman will go on display on Monday, Nov. 16 in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library. Remembrance: A Daughter’s Reflections, co-sponsored by the Manhattan College archives and the Holocaust Resource Center, will run until Dec. 18. Inspired by photos that an American soldier gave to her father after he was liberated from Dachau, the paintings are a visual representation of the Holocaust that has evolved slowly. There are no accusations or condemnation, just contemplation of the psychological space in which we find ourselves. Read.

 

One-Woman Show Examines
North American Immigration Debate

Manhattan College will host the one-woman show The Deportee’s Wife on Monday, Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The show, sponsored by sociology, peace studies and campus ministry and social action, is free and open to the public. It tells the story of the marriage of Giselle Stern Hernandez. She moved to Mexico after her husband, Roberto, was deported from Chicago, despite the fact that she was born and raised in the United States, and they were legally married. Hernandez brings a personal voice to the North American immigration debate. For more information, click Here.

Manhattan College

Johnson

Author Steven Johnson will address the Manhattan College community about his book Everything Bad is Good for You: How Today’s Popular Culture is Actually Making Us Smarter (2005), on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 4:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. Johnson is the best-selling author of six books on the intersection of science, technology and personal experience. His writings have influenced everything from the way political campaigns use the Internet, to cutting-edge ideas in urban planning and the battle against 21st-century terrorism. Johnson is also a contributing editor for Wired magazine and a monthly columnist for Discover magazine. He is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University’s department of journalism and lectures widely on technological, scientific and cultural issues to both corporate and educational institutions. Environmental Engineering Professor Receives $240,000 Grant

Dr. Robert Sharp, the D.J. O’Connor Endowed Chair of Environmental Engineering, has received a $240,000 research grant for the Hazen and Sawyer and CH2M-Hill joint venture to carry out research in support of New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Applied Research Program. The work will focus on optimization and implementation of biological nutrient removal at wastewater treatment plants. The funding will support two graduate research assistants and two undergraduate research assistants for a two-year period. For more faculty and staff accomplishments, click Here.

 

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dr. Thom Gencarelli, associate professor and chair of the communication department, was invited to serve as the external reviewer for a dissertation Pragmatism not Idealism: Radiohead, Technopoly, and the Global Movement for Change by doctoral candidate Phillip Anthony Rose at York University in Toronto on Nov. 3. He was also invited by the New York Society of General Semantics to offer a solo guest lecture on Language Acquisition and Cognitive Development on Dec. 3 as part of the society’s Expanded Seminars series.

Dr. Jeffrey Cherubini, assistant professor of physical education and human performance, published the article “Coaches’ Perspectives on Eighth-Grade Athletes Playing High School Varsity Sports,” which appeared in the fall 2009 issue of The Physical Educator. The paper was co-authored by Tiffany Bentley ’07, who is a physical education teacher in the Irvington, N.Y., school district.

Dr. Shawn Ladda, professor of physical education and human performance, delivered the presentation The National Association for Girls and Women in Sport of the United States: Continued Advocacy Toward Equity for All at the 2009 Congress of the International Association for Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women in Stellenbosch, South Africa, this past July.

The Manhattan College Pipes & Drums will be hosting a Piper’s Ball on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Gaelic Park (240th Street and Corlear Avenue). Hoops Season’s Opening Month

The 2009-10 men’s college basketball campaign begins for the Jaspers with a home game against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:00 p.m. The season’s opening month features the annual Battle of the Bronx matchup with Fordham on Nov. 28 at 7:00 p.m. in Draddy Gymnasium. The women, under first-year head coach John Olenowski, open at home against St. Francis (NY). Follow both teams throughout the year at GoJaspers.com.

Two Wins at Wishmaker Tournament

Lacrosse

The Manhattan College men’s lacrosse team concluded its fall season on Oct. 21 with two games at the Wishmaker Tournament at Dowling College. On a cold and rainy day, the Jaspers notched a pair of victories. Manhattan knocked off Stony Brook, 7-6, and posted a 15-11 victory over Dowling. The Jaspers open the 2010 regular season with a nationally-televised matchup at perennial national power Johns Hopkins on Feb. 20. Read.
