Teach-In Examines Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

A teach-in on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Various sessions based on the class schedule will take place throughout the day in Smith Auditorium from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. A teach-in is an opportunity for lengthier discussion and consideration of an important, generally controversial, topic that deserves more attention than just one class period. Most of the sessions will be presentations and panels by Manhattan faculty and students. The topics will range from economic considerations at home and abroad, to religious and ethical dimensions and the responsibilities of journalists covering the wars. Air Force ROTC instructors have been invited to present as well. The entire Manhattan College community is welcome to attend, professors are encouraged to bring classes, and students are welcome during their free periods. The Teach-In is co-sponsored by campus ministry and social action, the peace studies program, the government and history departments, and the student organizations JustPeace and the government and politics club. For more information, contact Lois Harr at (718) 862-7142 or e-mail lois.harr@manhattan.edu.

Campus Ministry and Social Action Awarded Catholic Relief Services Grant

The office of campus ministry and social action (CMSA), in cooperation with the student organization JustPeace, has been awarded a grant from Catholic Relief Services (CRS). From its Fair Trade Fund, CRS awards “In the Marketplace Grants” to fund efforts to grow the Fair Trade market in the United States. According to CRS, such grants should promote broad-based sustainable growth of the marketplace, as opposed to benefiting one particular company or group. Special emphasis is placed on work with youth, young adults and diverse communities. CMSA’s winning application calls for a three-pronged effort including enhancing the existing effort to promote awareness and increase demand for fair trade products within the campus community; continue work with Sodexo Dining Services on the introduction of additional fair trade products; and a faculty development component aimed at introducing fair trade and economic justice concepts and information into the curriculum. To learn more about the CMSA project, contact Lois Harr at (718) 862-7142 or e-mail lois.harr@manhattan.edu. For more information about Fair Trade, click Here.

Physical Education Faculty and Students Share National Stage

Dr. Shawn Ladda, professor of physical education and human performance, was voted to serve as president of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) in 2009. NAGWS is a national association and part of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Through this national service, Ladda was afforded the chance to select a Manhattan College student to attend the National AAHPERD Student Leadership Conference. Kara Scanlon ’10 represented Manhattan College, and Kaitlin Rodriguez ’11 was eventually elected President Elect – Future Professionals of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Let It Snow

On days when classes must be canceled because of snow conditions, announcements will be broadcast on WINS AM 1010. In addition, a recorded message can also be accessed at the College’s telephone number (718) 862-7013. Faculty, employees and commuting students should use this number. At times when this recording is played, the number is a “listen only” extension and will not accept messages. The Manhattan College Web site also will display cancellations under the Calendars link. Those who have signed up for the e2campus emergency system will automatically receive notification. Information will be relayed to the residence halls through the security guards and residence directors. We ask that resident students not call the switchboard. If classes must be canceled during the day, information will be relayed by audix on the College’s telephone system and on the radio station listed above.
