Dr. Brennan O’Donnell Named Honorary Member of Pen and Sword Society

Dr. O’Donnell was recently inducted into the Pen and Sword Society. The citation stated, “While Dr. O’Donnell has an impressive resume and many accomplishments under his belt, what is most remarkable about Dr. O’Donnell is his ability to make such an impression on our campus community in such a short amount of time. After only nine months of being an official Jasper, Dr. O’Donnell has proven to be an excellent leader, concerned with the students, Lasallian heritage, and future of Manhattan College. He has made a conscious effort to be a presence on campus … He has set an example for making change and we look forward to what he has in store for Manhattan. On behalf of the 80th Class of Pen and Sword, I think it is more than fair to say that we feel confident leaving Manhattan in the hands of a leader like Dr. O’Donnell.”

In Memoriam

LePorisz

Stephen N. LePorisz ’06, M.E., died suddenly on March 15, 2010.  Friends remember Stephen as a dynamic individual who lived his all-too-short life to the fullest.  He loved engineering, photography, coffee and spending time with friends and family. Dr. Zella Kahn-Jetter, professor of mechanical engineering, remembers: “Stephen was a brilliant student who loved a good joke. He made everyone, faculty and students alike, laugh. He had wonderful sense of humor.” Stephen had a serious side, too.  After graduating with honors, he worked for Turner Construction and Collado Engineering. His leadership and zeal for his profession were recognized by colleagues at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), a national professional association where he was the president-elect of the bi-state chapter. Erica Ross ’00, M.E., remembers: “how Stephen could light up a room just by walking into it.  He was a vibrant spirit, a wonderful friend and a devoted son and grandson.”  Giovanni Cerini '06, M.E., knows that “Stephen will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have know him.” Read

John Soldinger Named to
2010 Stopper of the Year Watch List

John Soldinger, a Jasper relief pitcher, was named to the midseason watch list for the sixth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award. The prestigious accolade will be given to the top reliever in NCAA Division I baseball for 2010. Soldinger is one of five freshmen on the 45-player watch list, and he is the only pitcher from a MAAC institution. The righthander leads the MAAC with six saves, has one win and a team-best 2.42 ERA in 13 appearances. He is second on Manhattan with 23 strikeouts and has only allowed six earned runs in 22 1/3 innings. Soldinger was selected MAAC Pitcher of the Week on March 2, after earning a four inning save in his collegiate debut to secure a 12-7 victory over #10 Miami. He was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on March 22 after picking up saves in wins over BIG EAST member Seton Hall and Liberty. At the conclusion of the regular-season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists and released Wednesday, June 2, prior to the start of NCAA regional tournament competition. The NCBWA's All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year's recipient to be announced on the opening day of the College World Series on June 19.

Five Crew Members Named to
MAAC All-Academic Team

Five crew members were named to the 2009-10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic Team. In order to be selected to the All-Academic team, student-athletes must have completed at least two semesters at their institution and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.20. The five Jaspers who were included in the 2010 men's and women's rowing All-Academic Teams were sophomores Anthony Bruzonne (Somers, NY), Jennifer Wong (Queens, N.Y.), Victoria Santos (Garnerville, N.Y.), along with the upperclassmen Joseph Cipolla (Jenkintown, Pa.) and Anne Mohan (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Jon Fiorillo Named MAAC
Defensive Player of the Week

After a stellar 16-save performance in a 15-6 win over VMI on Saturday, Manhattan College junior goalkeeper Jon Fiorillo (Painted Post, N.Y.) has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week. Fiorillo yielded just six goals in the victory and didn't allow more than two goals in any period.  He stopped 16 of the Keydets' 37 shots.  Fiorillo also corralled four ground balls in the game to pick up his fourth win of the season.  He is the second Jasper to earn MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.  Sophomore defenseman Kyle Moeller (South Setauket, N.Y.) was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on March 15 for his play in Manhattan's loss to Princeton.

Manhattan's Johnson Named Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Award Winner

Manhattan's Albert Johnson III was named the MAAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Performer of the Week, the week of April 20. Johnson, a sophomore from Painted Post, N.Y., grabbed a silver medal in the men's triple jump at the Larry Ellis Invitational Track and Field Meet at Princeton on Saturday.  In taking second, Johnson posted an NCAA Regional and IC4A qualifying distance of 15.08-meters.

Michelle Pacheco Named
Second Team All-Met

Senior basketball guard Michelle Pacheco (Bronx, NY) was selected to the All-Met Second Team.  Pacheco earned a place on the All-MAAC First Team after leading the Lady Jaspers to a 15-15 record and fourth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in 2009-10. Pacheco started all 30 games as a senior and placed second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game.  She averaged a league-leading 5.0 assists per game and placed second in the MAAC in steals (2.7 spg).  Pacheco also ranked among the top 10 in the MAAC in field goal percentage (sixth, .403), free throw percentage (sixth, .773), assist/turnover ratio (fifth, 1.3) and minutes played (fifth, 34.9).  She notched seven 20-point efforts and shared MAAC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 8.  Her 149 assists this season were the fourth-highest single-season total in program history, while her 80 steals were fifth-best for a single-season at Manhattan.  Pacheco finished her career ranked seventh on the Lady Jaspers' all-time assists list (328) and 11th all-time with 165 career steals. Pacheco was honored at the NIT/MBWA Awards Dinner at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY, on April 21.  Now in its 77th year, the Met Writers Dinner is the oldest annual college basketball awards dinner in the United States.

Erika Sullivan Earns MAAC
Pitcher of the Week Honors

For the second time this season, junior Erika Sullivan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) has been named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Pitcher of the Week.  Sullivan went 4-0 with a 0.66 ERA in four starts that week. She started her week with a five-hit shutout, her fourth of the season, in the Lady Jaspers' 1-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader sweep over Albany on April 13.  Sullivan then tossed 11 innings the next day, as Manhattan notched a 5-3, 11-inning victory at Stony Brook.  She gave up just one run and scattered eight hits in the win. Sullivan was even better in a pair of MAAC wins over the weekend.  Against Canisius, Sullivan tossed a complete game three-hitter, and the only run she surrendered came on a home run in the second inning.  At one point she retired 13 consecutive Griffs, as Manhattan snapped its 13-game losing streak to Canisius with a 5-1 victory.  Sullivan struck out four and didn't walk a batter in the victory.  She also went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game.  Sullivan previously earned MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors on March 22 after tossing three shutouts during the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.  She currently leads the Lady Jaspers with 10 wins, four shutouts and a 2.44 ERA.
