Manhattan College Off Broadway

An original musical retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, written by Liz Muller, Collin Simon and Juan Cardenas ’07 premiered on Jan. 19, 2011, at Theatre 80 St. Marks in New York City and features a cast that is largely comprised of Manhattan College alumni and current students. This new version of the classic play is set in a macabre retro-future world evocative of the steampunk genre that fuses Victorian and science fiction elements. The story, while staying true to the play, has an original script with enough changes to make it accessible as a musical, entertaining as a story and different enough to keep the audience involved. The music is melodic and memorable, and the lyrics are involved and poetic, and both embrace a modern edge.

Macbeth is being put on thanks to PiPE DREAM theatre, a newly formed theater company that is putting on shows in off-Broadway theaters. PiPE DREAM theatre is the brainchild of Liz Muller, director of the Manhattan College Players, and Collin Simon, the Players’ musical director. The two have worked together at Manhattan College since 2006 and during that time they have mounted more than 50 Players productions.

Tickets are $30 online or $35 at the door, and the show runs until Sunday, Jan. 23. To purchase tickets and further information, please visit: www.THEATRE80.net.
