Sophia Hirakis ’11 Receives Biomedical Grant

Sophia Hirakis, a senior and biochemistry major at Manhattan, was honored as a 2010 Leonidas Lantzounis Research Grant winner at the Hellenic Medical Society of New York’s 74th Annual Scholarship gala, which was held in December. The award provides Hirakis with a $2,500 scholarship to fund her biomedical research and she will present the research at the National American Chemical Society Conference in Anaheim, Calif., in March.

Last summer, Hirakis worked on the experiment with James McCullagh, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, as part of the Branigan Scholars Grant and also performed the experiment during the fall semester in McCullagh’s Organic Chemistry Lab I class.
