College Names New Manhattan College has named Stephen Dombroski as its new sports information director. He will oversee media relations for the Jaspers' 19 Division I athletic programs. Dombroski comes to Manhattan from Siena College, where he served as assistant sports information director. Prior to Siena, Dombroski worked as a graduate assistant at Wagner College. Read
ON CAMPUS College Presents Human A selection of paintings by artist Tom Block will go on display on Feb. 6 in the fifth floor lobby and Alumni Room of Manhattan College's O'Malley Library. The Human Rights Painting Project exhibit, sponsored by the Manhattan College archives, will run until May 2. It will open with a reception in the Alumni Room from 4:30-8:00 p.m. on Feb. 6. During the reception, Block will deliver an illustrated lecture Artist as Shaman in an Age of Uncertainty. Read
Black History Month Program In celebration of Black History Month, Manhattan College will host a lunchtime lecture and book signing by NY1 News political reporter Dominic Carter on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in Smith Auditorium. The event is open to the entire Manhattan College community. A fixture at NY1 since the news channel launched in 1992, Carter published No Momma's Boy in 2007, a book that chronicles his triumphant struggle to overcome his mother's mental illness while growing up in a Bronx housing project. Aquinas Lecture Will Explore Richard Kearney, the Charles B. Seelig chair of philosophy at Boston College, will deliver the 2008 Aquinas Lecture on Friday, Feb. 15 at 12:00 p.m. in the Alumni Room of O'Malley Library. The program The Narrative Imagination is free and open to the public. Kearney is the author of more than 20 books on European philosophy and literature. His most recent work in philosophy comprises the trilogy Philosophy at the Limit . Read

College To Host Undergraduate Mathematics Conference Manhattan College will host the third annual Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference on Saturday, April 5. The goal of the conference is to offer undergraduates the opportunity to attend and actively participate in a professional meeting while encouraging mathematical conversation among undergraduates. In the past two years, the conference has drawn participants from colleges throughout the tri-state area, New England and Pennsylvania. This year's keynote address will be delivered by Carl Pomerance, professor of mathematics at Dartmouth College . FACULTY Chemical Engineering Professor James Patrick Abulencia ' 97 joined Manhattan College's chemical engineering department as an assistant professor in 2007. An active member of the American Society for Engineering Ed ucation, as well as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), he is the faculty moderator of Manhattan College's student chapter of the AIChE. He recently authored the article “Tissue Engineering and its Application in Arthritis,” which appeared in the fall 2007 issue of The Manhattan College Engineer newsletter. Faculty and Staff Accomplishments Dr. Nada Marie Assaf-Anid, professor of chemical engineering, has been nominated programming chair of the environmental division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and will lead the programming of all sessions and symposia during the society's Philadelphia Centennial in fall 2008. Dr. Claudia Setzer, professor of religious studies, presented her paper “A Pinch of Common Sense: Nineteenth Century Feminist Biblical Interpretation” at the American Academy of Religion's annual meeting in San Diego, Calif., this past November. Dr. Mohammad Naraghi, professor of mechanical engineering, organized four sessions on Innovative Methods in Mechanical Engineering Ed ucation at the International Mechanical Congress in Seattle, Wash., this past November. Manhattan "Thinks Pink" for Women's Basketball on ESPNU The Manhattan College Athletic Department will host its annual “Think Pink” celebration on Feb. 15 during its nationally televised women's basketball contest with Iona . Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The Jaspers are also aiming for a record setting crowd as part of the NCAA's “Pack the House” initiative. The contest kicks off a doubleheader with the Manhattan men and will air on ESPNU. Tip off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Draddy Gymnasium. Read

Baseball Squad Receives High Praise The Manhattan College baseball team has been predicted to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in a poll released by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper . In addition, sophomore Tom Costigan was named the MAAC's preseason Pitcher of the Year. All voting was conducted by the league's head coaches. It is the second time since the MAAC's inception in 1982 that the Jaspers have been the league's preseason favorite. Read
