Adult Degree Completion Program Targets Working Adults

With classes beginning on Feb. 23, now is the time for working adults who have long contemplated returning to school to complete an undergraduate degree to take the first step toward this goal. Author Hooman Majd To Speak About Iran at Manhattan College

Best-selling author and journalist Hooman Majd, a new voice on Iran, one of the United States’ top foreign policy concerns, will speak at Manhattan College on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the William J. Scala Academy Room of Leo Hall. The event is free and open to the public. A resident of New York City, Majd is the author of The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran, a New York Times best-seller. The book, which spent time as the No. 1 foreign policy book and the No. 1 book on Islam on Amazon.com, is a critical but affectionate portrait of Iranian politics and culture. It attempts to explain Iran’s history and quirks to Western observers. Read.

 

Holocaust Resource Center Welcomes Dr. Ben Kiernan

Dr. Ben Kiernan, author and editor of numerous works on recent events in Southeast Asia, will speak at Manhattan College on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event, presented by the Holocaust Resource Center, is free and open to the public. Kiernan, the Whitney Griswold Professor of History and director of the influential genocide studies program at Yale University, will deliver the lecture Genocide in World History. It is based on his award-winning book Blood and Soil: A World History of Genocide and Extermination from Sparta to Darfur (2007). Read.

 

American Legacy Editor and Tuskegee Airmen Visit Highlights Black History Month

Audrey Peterson, editor of American Legacy, the quarterly magazine celebrating African American history and culture, will speak about the Harlem Renaissance at Manhattan College as part of Black History Month on Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event is open to all members of the Manhattan College community. Prior to assuming her current position in 1999, Peterson was an editor at Reader’s Digest General Books, where she worked on such historical titles as the Atlas of American and our Glorious Century among other books.

On Thursday, Feb. 26 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the O'Malley Library, members of the Tuskegee Airmen will visit campus. These brave, groundbreaking aviators, who fought in World War II while fighting racism at the same time, will share their stories. Please R.S.V.P. if you plan to attend to alumni@manhattan.edu. Energy Crisis Lecture Highlights Engineers Week

Dr. Graham Walker, professor of mechanical engineering, will deliver the public lecture Engineering Solutions to the Upcoming Energy Crisis on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room of Leo Hall. The lecture highlights the school of engineering’s Engineers Week, scheduled for Feb. 15-21. Walker’s presentation will outline global climate change issues and present the engineering solutions that are available today, along with the pros and cons associated with various solutions to the problem. Relay For Life Cancer Walk

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an overnight event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, will return to Manhattan College for its sixth year on Saturday, April 4, 2009 from 3:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m. in Draddy Gymnasium. The event has become a school and community favorite, bringing students together for the common cause of fighting cancer. We hope to raise even more money than in past years and have set our goal at $50,000 to help the estimated 97,000 New Yorkers and 1 million Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.  For more information, e-mail relayforlife@manhattan.edu or click Here.
