Manhattan Mourns Loss of
Generous Benefactor

John J. Horan ’40, distinguished alumnus and former chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Merck & Co., Inc., passed away on Jan. 22 from natural causes.

Dr. O’Donnell Discusses The Good News in Catholic Higher Education at
ACCU Conference

Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College, was invited by the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) to co-present with Sister Janet Eisner, S.N.D., president of Emmanuel College, on the good news in Catholic higher education at the 2011 annual meeting, Catholic Higher Education: Carrying on God’s Noiseless Work.

Math Professor Volunteers During Holidays To Educate Graduate Students in Cambodia

Experts Brainstorm on Sustainable Features for New Student Commons

On Jan. 28, faculty and students from Manhattan College, architects, engineers and consultants gathered in Memorial Hall to discuss the sustainable vision for the new five-story, 67,400 square-foot student commons.

Two Graduate Students Papers Accepted for Presentation by APA

The American Psychological Association (APA) recently accepted graduate students Delgermaa Ganbaatar's and Darren Meyers' research papers for poster presentation at the August meeting.

Manhattan Student is Finalist for Fulbright Scholarship

The National Screening Committee for the Fulbright Student Scholarship Program recently notified Jacqueline Hargrove, a senior and psychology major, that she has been recommended as a finalist for a Fulbright research scholarship.

Ice Rink to Open in Van Cortlandt Park Next Winter

Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy recently announced plans to open an outdoor public ice skating rink in Van Cortlandt Park, the first one in the Bronx in 50 years.

Last Chance to Attend an Interfaith Week Event

As part of Interfaith Week Feb. 14-17, the College planned three events including the last event, which will be held today, Thursday, Feb. 17. The Muslim and Christian clubs of Manhattan and faculty will take students to the Three Faiths: Judaism, Christianity, Islam exhibit at the New York Public Library branch in Manhattan.

Captivates Manhattan

More than 600 people crowded Smith Auditorium on Feb. 9, 2011, where Immaculée Ilibaziga, author of Left to Tell, a New York Times bestseller, and Rwandan Genocide survivor presented A Story of Hope, Faith and Courage.

John Wilcox to Speak at James Luther Adams Forum on March 31

The 15th annual James Luther Adams Forum on Religion and Society will occur on Thursday, March 31 at 4:00 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room in Leo Hall. John Wilcox, director of Lasallian studies at Manhattan College, will speak on the topic, Together and by Association: The Legacy of James Luther Adams and the Future of Religious Colleges and Universities.

Manhattan to Host Spuyten Duyvil Undergraduate Mathematics Conference on April 2

On Saturday, April 2, the sixth annual Spuyten Duyvil undergraduate mathematics conference, funded by a grant from the MAA-NSF, will take place on the College’s campus. The full-day conference runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and features presentations by undergraduate students and faculty in mathematics and related disciplines.

Manhattan College welcomed six new employees in January and February including: Terence P. Hannigan, Ph.D., ABPP, director of counseling and health services; Ariel Pesante, compliance coordinator of athletics; Edwin Reinoso, computer center and help desk; Cheryl Harrison, Ph.D., executive director of the division of continuing and professional studies; Peter Rodriguez, campus security; and Helen White, periodicals assistant for O’Malley Library.

Malin Olsson Shatters School
Record In Long Jump

Malin Olsson, a member of Manhattan’s women’s track and field team, broke her own school record with a leap of 6.14 meters (20 feet, 1½ inches) in February and became the first Manhattan woman ever to jump 20 feet indoors.

Manhattan was picked to finish fourth in the MAAC according to the 2011 Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll, and Chad Salem, Mark Onorati and Mike McCann, Jasper seniors, were also each selected on the All-MAAC preseason team.
